I'd say there is one rationale for getting it even when it financially might not be the best value. You can think of it like getting a gym membership. If you didn't have the membership it would be harder to motivate yourself to go whereas with the membership the sunk cost fallacy incentivizes you to go to make it worth it. Basically if you think you ought to go to the dentist, wouldn't without insurance, but would if you had insurance, then maybe there's some value to getting it to motivate youself to go.

In fact, if it gets you to go to the dentist more it may even save you money long term as people generally could reduce their overall dental expenses if they invested more into preventative care and less into emergency care after problems occur.
