Train Travel in India - A Short Guide

Absolutely the best way to see India. Sleep your way to the next destination, saving time, and money on hotels. Indian Railways also offers Indrail train passes for foreign tourists who plan an extensive itinerary, making booking a mere formality . As far as security goes, I have travelled roughly a total of 50, 000 km on the trains and never had a thing stolen.

As this video is for foreigners, there are few points to mention..
1. the schedule of booking tickets has been changed.
2. more early you book, less the price
3. there is foreigners quota in all trains
4. you can track live status and check seats on erail.in
5. you can complaint and get rectify your issues on Twitter to ministry of railways
6. As current govt focused on cleanliness and hygiene, so you can expect good food for sure.
7. if you won't get seat with your co-pessenger, you can request your Indian mate to adjust, usually Indian do this stuff and you can also request TT for the same. most people are helpful so don't hesitate

Few corrections.
The very first train with chair, That's not first class, That's normal chair car, First class have 2 seats on both sides.
You can book tickets 120 days prior to your journey,
You may book your tickets in emergency, though that would cost you roughly 200-300 INR extra, But that allows to you book ticket even 1 day before journey. :)

That is not 1st AC (1:03), that is a normal AC chair car. 1st AC only has 4 seats in row, and seats are different than those shown in the video.

The video shows a porter (with red shirt and North Face bag), but doesn't talk about them. They all have red shirts, charge 100rs (in my limited tourist experience at least), and can be trusted to put you on the right platform in more or less the right spot for your class of ticket, to wait for your train.

I used the trains when visiting in 1975; we reserved berths on what is now a 3 tier sleeper (no AC). That first leg of the journey took 20 hours, bit of a culture shock to someone used to a long train ride being an hour and a half! My memories are a little vague but I seem to recall the seats were wooden with no cushioning (feel free to correct me) and we hadn't ordered bed rolls. I can honestly say that night on the top bunk in my sleeping bag was the best nights sleep I have ever had when travelling. Food was ordered at one station and collected at the next, everyone we met was friendly and I would never fly anywhere in India if I visited again - you would never get the scale of the country by air.

You missed the General class / un-reserved compartments and sleeper class or 2nd sitting. Most essential is our toilets in general compartments. Next time try these ....

Sir foreign nationals don't need to book tickets in 90 days advance as they always get confirm tickets even if they have to book today and travel tomorrow. provided you need to provide your passport with visa at booking counter at time of visit.... if you book online need to select nationality as foreigner in the drop Be welcomed to our incredible

"...Brave enough to eat it ..." it is a bit harsh...I think the IRTC Food might not be a fancy restaurant meal but it goes through a decent quality just fast food on wheels ...you will occasionally see some bad meals...but that happens everywhere

I love waking up seeing Indian village life slowly rolling past through the window grille, with the cool breeze flowing, unencumbered by glass panes & sitting in the doorway, sipping chai and smoking a little charas as the sun sets....heaven!
