I miss those guys. I think about them everyday. I see their FB posts about life and career. I know we accomplished something together.

This is so true, those guys you meet and grow up in the Army with become family. Me and my closest friends from the Army are in a group chat and talk just about everyday, reminiscing and just staying in touch really helps me cope even though we’re not together anymore.

I seen this with my cousin, hurts him for sure. He did 8 years in the Marines. Thankfully people can still stay in touch with each other's lives on Facebook and what not

You always bond with other veterans for the rest of your life. Its very interesting listening to their experiences

When I came home I stopped caring about everything, didn't wanna do anything, it was hard to find work. Had to move back in with my mom for a while, but my brother always made me come to the gym with him, and offered to cover my membership until I found a job.I had started lifting 2 years before I got out, so finding a gym I liked and going every day helped me get over it.

I got out six months ago. I was one of the last of the OGs. Today I'm going to the wedding of one of my boys. Can't wait to see him.

Where I come from there’s a military job placement organization and they helped me land a job with tons of vets from multiple eras and some just getting in. Nice environment! You know it’s special when civilians say how lucky they are to work there too.

Im going through this right now. 3 years at my current duty station as my first base. Now I leave for Korea in a month, and I'm both excited and honestly sad about leaving. Out of all the people I had when I first got here, me and my sergeant are the last ones. We started as PFCs and are leaving as SGTs. It's a bitter pill

Strange, I was only close friends with my section chief and squad leader. I stayed in contact with them for quite a few years after I fulfilled my four year contract. They’re both dead now. The rest of the dudes that were in my squad, either owed me money, or they tried to put their hands on my first wife. It’s life

Self isolation and minimal contact with everyone. That seems to work for me.

Came to the comments hoping to see vets talking more about this. I miss the squad. Both literally and figuratively. I don't cope, just keep trying to build a new 'squad'.

Did 35 years, it's hard seeing comrades leave or be lost, no mater how long you were in.

Americans have a faster turnover in troops then we have/had in the CF, added to that the vastly larger forces you have, have resulted in a somewhat different culture.
In the CF, basically you lose touch with a lot of the people you start with.

But the longer you stay in the more you work with the same people across the country and the all the services.

Thus you join sort of "hard arses" club, made up long term friend/ competition/distant family, members.

They become your touchstone while in.

The danger in that is at the end.

When you finally get released most of us discover we didn't just lose friends, we lose ourselves somewhere.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense

My buddies when I was in are all over the country. My best friend joined the army and fell REALLY far when he got out. He hated being in and hated getting out. Ended in prison. I immediately got a job offer from someone I know who happened to serve with me. I was surrounded by vets and felt more like I didn't have to worry about walking on eggshells with others.

Starting year eight now, only keep in touch with one of the brothers from the lower enlisted days. The rest left the service and the memories of the service behind.

Now I'm ready to do the same.

Merchant Marine but kind of the same experience, get really close to a crew and then everyone disperses when the jobs are done. Hurts every time but singing and passing around a bottle seems to help.

It was really hard, I didn’t cope well at all for a while. Luckily, through discord and Steam I have been able to maintain contact with several friends from Boot Camp, my first station and my last. We do gaming sessions, play D&D and are planning biannual trips to different states for visits. It’s been a few years and we’ve made one trip so far, things are going well now.
