Debunking 'Ozempic Face' Myths: Facial Plastic Surgeon Weights in (is it actually a 'thing?')

The term "Ozempic Face" has been spreading across many social media platforms, and Dr. Karam receives questions about this trend constantly. Ozempic is an FDA-approved drug used to treat diabetes. In using this drug, many people experience side effects besides the control of their blood glucose. These side effects include things like appetite suppression and an elevated metabolism. Naturally, many people experience weight-loss when they begin taking Ozempic because of all the side benefits that go along with using this drug. People have also reported, though, that they have experienced rapid aging in their faces as they continue to use Ozempic. Dr. Karam explains, though, why Ozempic is NOT rapidly aging its users, but that it is revealing the true age of their skin. While Ozempic is a tool that people use for weight-loss and diabetes treatment, Dr. Karam is still a firm believer that lifestyle changes are vital in maintaining a healthy weight AND a youthful glow.

Thank you for this: I am a 46 yo woman that has been working out harder, eating better and exchanging fat for muscle for the last year. It is discouraging that my weight hasn't changed at all. Knowing that losing more weight will make my face age more, right now it is looking great and I get compliments all the time on how young I look. This video made me less frustrated with this process.

The problem is this is being prescribed for people that do not have a problem with weight. I lost over 60 pounds a few years ago and noticed in my face it changed. If you add weight loss to somebody that doesn’t have any extra fat, yes, their faces will look saggy.

Thank you so much for this information. It’s so nice to have an actual doctor discuss these effects and what’s truly happening and needed. I recently finished the drug for 40lbs of stubborn menopause, thyroid issues weight gain. I’m 59 and thrilled to have my health and body back but don’t like my face, skin, etc. I’m so happy to have found your videos.

I started on ozempic about four months ago for type 2 diabetes and dropped 15 bls. My face had a lot of fat in it because I was overweight. The 15 pounds I lost trimmed the extra fat from my face and I never looked better.

I am so thankful for this medicine. My whole life I knew I was missing the signal in my mind telling me i am full. I would eat until I was sick, since childhood. This medicine finally helped me feel full!!!!

I lost almost 70 pounds in my early 30s on diet and exercise and now I look younger, I eat lots of protein, supplements, good skincare. I visited my doctor and told her I wanted to get leaner and she mention after examining my face that I should not loose a single ounce more because my face will suffer, so I stay at a healthy 145 pounds and kept my face too. Kept lifting and eating well!

I don't entirely agree about weight-loss revealing the "true face" age. If you've been overweight for a very long time your skin has Stretched & once you lose the volume that "Overstretched" skin will fall and sag giving you that older look. He doesn't say it but that's a factor too.

I’ve seen people lose drastic amounts of weight from gastric bypass and they had this look to their face as well. I think it’s just the drastic sudden weight loss. Just happens to be ozempic is the more common cause of this weight loss we see now from celebrities

I had Emergency exploratory surgery in 2020. I ended up with 2 holes in my stomach and a fight to live! It took me months to recover and that long to eat too. Needless to say I LIVE but it aged me 15 years! I so can relate!

When you lose weight quickly, it always affects your face. It's not Ozempic's fault.

Curious as to why you didn’t mention the Ozempic weight loss results in 2/3 muscle loss and only 1/3 fat loss? Another doctor pointed that out which I found shocking.

I've lost 25 pounds and i feel like i look much younger. My face isn't puffy & my jowls don't sag as much. Everyone is different.

I think having a little extra weight when your in your 60's can make you look younger. Don't get to thin it looks bad imo

A friend of mine in her 30ies also used Ozempic and lost 9kg. At the beginning she looked good, but like 2 weeks later I saw her without make up and I was shocked. She looks now at least 10 years older!

I am “normal” weight - not overweight - but had gained weight after having two kids and then being bedridden or very sedentary for about four years with an illness.

After becoming active again and getting nearly 10, 000 steps a day, I lost 13 pounds in 13 months.

After losing 11-12 pounds, I noticed that the volume in my glabella (third eye area aka in between the eyebrows), temple and under eyes went away - practically overnight I saw a complete deflation.

13 pounds is not a lot to lose. So I would imagine losing even more weight would cause even more of a deflation!!

Semiglutide took the edge off and helped me drop 40 lbs... and I did have ozempic face for a short time but with drinking water and putting skin regiments with vitamin E and good oils on my face and taking vitamins... my skin adjusted and it went away, at least for me. Of course you have to build habits while on semiglutide that you can maintain after. But the semiglutide gave me the edge I needed to have time to learn what actually works, like fasting, and the types of foods my body doesnt react to... and gave my body time to adjust without having my insulin going on overdrive in the background causing issues. I think im going to try the nutrisense next to track which foods affect my blood sugar the most... still on the journey of maintaining good health... its a lifelong process... I'd rather stay ahead of the game though if I can... ... oh I meant to say, thank you for posting this video... good info... I didn't kmow what I'd previously experienced had a name... I just figured my skin had to adjust to the rapid weight loss... which thank God it did for me haha... lots of vitamin body oil lotions involved :P - oh for anybody out there on that journey... a trick for the fasting that got me through, my doctor explained creamer in my coffee that is not sweet tasting and has no sugar if course, and a little peanut butter or cheese between my fast wouldnt break it. The 16 to 18 hour fasts were when the weight started melting off... but I built up to that, and ate low carb, high fat and protein in between. I'm not a doctor, and we are all different, so I wouldnt say this is advice, but thought I'd share in case someone finds it helpful. I'm not sure why, but protein bars and shakes throw my body off... part of my learning curve. Avacado on keto toast and cottage cheese with blueberries work for me though... still learning as I go :)

I remember hearing that when you are older, it's either 'face or figure'. My mom's family all look so young, like 20 years younger than their real age, but they are all overweight. Their skin is beautiful even though they don't have a great diet.

Thank you for this video and for letting us know that once the facial fat is gone, it won't return. When I was 18 years old, I used to have a puffy face, I took 5 pounds and it showed so much on my face. Now I'm 45 and if I take 10 pounds it doesn't show at all on my face.

I used to do research in molecular biology and I would recommend everyone to stay away from this drug unless they have it prescribed by a doctor.

Yes it’s totally normal and expected that if you loose weight when you’re not so young anymore, you will look older. And if you’re overweight your face will look younger. I’ve lost 40 pounds with diet only in 2 years, so very slowly, at around age 50. Definitely it affected my face, unfortunately. Sunken cheeks, hollow temples.
