The RUTHLESS Execution Of Lord Haw Haw

One of the most shocking traitors during the Second World War was William Joyce, Lord Haw Haw. He was a British fascist who defected to the Nazis and Germany, and with this he worked with Joseph Goebbels in creating radio broadcasts. He would try to demoralise the British population but his broadcast Germany Calling would ultimately be laughed at by the British. But at the end of the conflict, the British would capture Lord Haw Haw.

He was then brought to trial as he was convicted of treason. There was debate around this as it was claimed he was not a British subject, however William Joyce was sentenced to death. Inside of Wandsworth Prison, he would be executed on the gallows by Albert Pierrepoint and his execution was the last in Britain for treason.

Hi all - I'm interested in seeing your responses to this video. William Joyce/Lord Haw Haw's sentence is one which is still controversial today. Do you think this was the correct course of action? Comment below your opinions!

It wasn’t ruthless or brutal, it was carried out in a fast and humane manner with Joyce’s neck snapping instantly severing his spinal cord rendering him deeply unconscious and dead shortly after. The whole process would have been over in 20 seconds or less from the hangman entering the condemned cell. The hangman was Albert Pierrepoint the famous British hangman, world renowned for his speed & efficiency

Our current politicians make him look like a complete amateur.

Plenty of treasonous activity going on nowadays, but never held to account.

If this was today he’d get 10 years jail and serve half. Then he’d write a book and appear on chat shows .

He was executed but the vile Mitford sisters just carried on with their lives because they were from the aristocracy

The historian A. J. P. Taylor remarked in his book English History 1914–1945 that "Technically, Joyce was hanged for making a false statement when applying for a passport, the usual penalty for which is a small fine."[39]

My parents lived through the German bombings of WWII and they were vehemently in support of Lord Haw Haw's life being ended. I trust their judgement.

They had to twist the law a bit for this one. He was from Galway in the Irish Republic and thus not a British Citizen so it’s certainly arguable it could not be treason. What sent him to the gallows was that he had once held a British passport. That works both ways. It puts you under the protection of the British Crown. It also makes you responsible to the British Crown and that was what hanged him. Personally I think it was the wrong decision but after 6 years of war, I would probably think differently. This is Germany calling, Germany calling.

Why do you call his execution 'Ruthless'? He got exactly what he deserved.

He was identified by his voice? Wow! I guess the scar was too obscure and difficult to notice?

He was not guilty of treason against the UK, as he was not a British citizen. Against the US, perhaps, but not the UK.

Why is he called traitor?
Think of all communists, then and now, in several countries! They are not called traitors even if they are! 🤔

Albert Pierpoint, wasn't notorious, he was extremely proficient. The man was very good at his job. And the bastards he took care of, deserved what they got. They got off lightly, quick, clean, death, compared to some of the horrendous things they did.

If he wasn't a British citizen, how could he be guilty of Treason? This was revenge, not justice.
