These are very helpful tips and techniques. Thanks very much! I'm a retired designer and my house is full of popcorn (1984). Going to DIY each room eventually. Skip trowel looks like a perfect solution.

I just moved to Florida and am new to the various textures used here. I am a handy man and did a lot of texture repairs in Ohio but these are new to me. I’ve gotten pretty good at most but am bidding I job using the skip trowel technique. I feel comfortable with the mechanical aspects of the trowel work but I didn’t see the videos of mixing ratios of the mud and sand. If you could point me to those it would be greatly appreciated. Also when you say you go back in the opposite direction are you going 90 degrees or 180? Really good video thanks for your time!

DIY with some experience over many years with construction. Father passed away leaving a standard 1960s ranch house with popcorn ceilings in 3/4 of the original home. Thank you Paul for sharing your expertise and tecniques. First layer of popcorn coverage probably thicker than yours and varying results between mine, my 15 yr old son's and his friend who is helping me. Notice tiny drying cracks in first coat and why I'm thinking it may be too thick, but seems to be holding well and second coat should cover them easily...would you agree? Also the newer ceilings have meditarainian knock-down texture on the ceiling, but I wanted to make them all the same and 'imperfect smooth' texture with recessed lighting to follow. My question is should I smooth out the mediterainian knock-down that's in good shape (seems like a lot of work) or leave it i.e how esthetically 'bad' does it look to have imperfect smooth ceiling texture next to mediterainian knock-down which are closer together in style than popcorn and mediterainian knock-down? Thanks, Jim

Hi. Just bought mid-60's home with painted popcorn...everywhere. I'm going to use your 2 skim coat method. Question: Is there any kind of special trowel that textures with a skip trowel? Is it the sand that gives it the texture appearance?

I'm a DYI'er and did one skim coat over a painted popcorn ceiling. I'm tackling the second skim coat tomorrow and thinking of doing this texture for the ceiling after the second skim coat. Do you need to add sand to the mixture? Is the sand necessary to get the skip trowel method to work? I've skim coated other ceilings in my house and been able to get a pretty flat ceiling but it took several coats to get it to flat. I think doing this instead would be faster. Plus I like the look of it. I have a couple more areas to do and so think I will try this in this room and see if I can get the hang of it.
Also, the mud seemed a little thicker than when you mix for skim coating. In skim coating you always say that the mud should be a yogurt consistency. In this video it looked thicker. Is that true?

Floor guy/ custom showers. But I can hang and finish drywall, paint, do carpentry, some plumbing etc. I'm at a pending property now priming a pretty big section I patch and floated after termite inspection.

I know you've said the mudded seams will react a little differently than the drywall. Would it be better to prime the ceiling before applying the skip trowel texture?

Quick question Paul, what do you recommend when skim coating a ceiling as far as where you start and stop? For example if I’m starting out in the corner do you bring each side and meet in the middle? I’m always worried about messing up what I already did?

How come you don’t always use the paint roller trick? Or is that only used for certain things?
