Smart Note-Taking Habit | Luhmann's Zettelkasten

Why is it important to take notes? In this video, I talk about how the daily note-taking habit made Niklas Luhmann such a prolific, productive writer.
Luhmann wrote more than 40 books and nearly 700 academic articles in his life. The secret to his productivity is his unique knowledge management system called Zettelkasten.

He made notes every time he read a book or article, and when he was about to write, all he had to do was just went through his notes, put them in a logical order and rewrite it in a coherent way.

This reminds me of the process of building LEGO as well as "mise en place" in cooking.
In LEGO, each brick is like a note. And we use the bricks (notes) to build something bigger (book/article/video).
In cooking, each ingredient is like a note. And we use the ingredients (notes) to cook a meal (book/article/video).
So, trying to write an article without notes is like trying to cook something without enough ingredients. As a result, you experience writer's block.
This is why making notes is important!

1. Research the material what you need.
E.g - chicken+capsicum.

Shu, the cooking analogy is brilliant. Years ago I had the chance to hang out with Neil Strauss for a day to watch a master writer at work. He spent most the day taking notes! He was constantly on his iPhone phone capturing highlights of anything interesting that came up in conversations. If you every want to know where to eat, ask Neil. He writes down the details of every restaurant and every meal he eats. He would duck out of a room and come back, and often it was writing a tweet about a idea generated from a conversation.

I’ve read tons of info about Luhmann and even read some of the stuff he wrote in German about his process. I see nothing about “Literature notes” anywhere. Is that something you added for clarification for the general reader?

Hi Shu, I suddenly remember you mentioned reflection and it seemed the idea come from the book "Great Mental Models". Is it come from one of your video? Thanks

I mean this is good for creative writing, I do it too. However, I'm struggling with writing notes for my classes to make them meaningful. If anyone has any tips, i'd appreciate it!
