"Sounds like hippie music, " is what we'd get. Mainly from a guy named Ed Boguski. He was our 'industrial arts' teacher at Franklin Junior High School.
Ed would oversee his eighth grade boys as we manufactured (for nobody's real benefit) such household items as the sugar scoop. Not a real demand item in '69 but anyway...
The scoops were made from old tin cans. Not old-old but used -- not rusted, previously owned and ate from before being discarded, only to then be dug out of a dumpster or ashcan, carved into a sugar scoop, and totally forgotten about or used elsewhere down the line as something else entirely -- kind of old. Sometimes we'd refashion plowshares into swords, tiny but useful, concealed until such time as an insurrection we had planned and hoped for but did never see arise. The song (he said, wistfully) It inspired us then, and what have we to show?
