I read about a woman (forget her name) who was the CEO of a major corporation. She made a lot of feminists mad when, in an interview, she said to other women, "you can't have it all. There are only so many hours in a day and you have to sleep sometime." She went on to speak about how much of her daughter's life she had missed because of work and how she regretted not being there.

I am well versed in this. My husband was a higher ranking NCO when in the Army. In charge, always on. When he got out it was obvious he would take a higher position similar to what he was doing in the Army. Left for work by 10AM—ON THE DOT!!
It was about a 35 mile drive one way. He was ON until about 9:30-10PM when he made the trip home. Never made time for us, always about the job. Pretty much ruined our marriage but we did not divorce. He finally retired but he was always antsy, like he should be doing something. I saw an old picture of him today and he looked exhausted. It was in his eyes. No joy, only resigned acceptance. I cried when I saw it.

He is right. Has nothing to do with men and women. Those types of jobs leaves no room even for your ownself. It's not easy.

Try being a shift supervisor and you'll soon realise most people aren't doing their jobs properly.

The military has a serious problem filling officer billets - our positions of power, if you will. A major part of this problem is that our officer corps' attrition rate is remarkably high. When asked why nobody is staying on the road to admiral, a Navy Surface Officer described it thus:

"Not everyone has the necessary mental disorders to stay in this job."

100% correct. Those top positions require never ending commitment to the performance of the job.

That's exactly it. I wish more people stopped back and thought things thru because then were could have honest conversations.

mr JP is damn right. In my lifetime experience, very powerful men either sacrifice everything on behalf of that successful identity or their power diminishes accordingly.

Wow. Exactly on point. I was manager of two different public utilities in my career. I was appointed by the Mayor of our medium sized community. People thought of my position as “powerful”. No. Wrong. Enormous responsibility. Endless accountability. Very little actual power. Always under fire by the very people you are trying to help. I wish JP had been one of our citizens.

And you are on call 100% of the time. You need to lead by example… no time off…if you don’t realize that you are signing up for the lowest position on the totem pole you don’t have the right priorities.

I wish someone had done some straight talking like that to me as a young person then I may not have spent 30 years working 70hrs a week driving a truck!!

Agreed Jordan. Most days are spent with them having to speak the truth telling people things they absolutely don't want to hear. Doesn't sound like fun right? So I would guess that if one accepted a position like that, they should accept them not for fame or fortune but because they know they are the most capable of keeping everyone safe and sound.

As a physician we worked all the time, holidays weekends and the hours are long, when I was in Medical School, my siblings were already sleeping and I was still studying, when I did a career day lecture in my daughter’s Middle School the kids want to know how much surgeons make, I showed the average salary in the USA, Pediatrician the lowest paid, my daughter came home and she said “mom your pay is low” I said “yea I just work a lot” Most of my colleagues’ children don’t want to become physicians, mine did not either
I missed out a lot of my daughter’s growing up, I’m still lucky my husband’s job was 9-5.
I loved my patients and their families, I gave it my all, they appreciated that I cared and treated them like my family.
Most people think doctors make a lot of money, the people in the hospital know we don’t have have much time for ourselves and it is an OVERWHELMING RESPONSIBILITY

If you want to know how its like being in power just play a grand strategy game and then imagine every order you give and every feedback you get is a detailed document with technical jargon that you have to read and sign. Then also imagine that leading units under your command will look for the least excuse to backstab you and end your game early. Suddenly a fun game becomes a very tedious chore and depending on the scale of the game it might not even be that fun in the first place. You have to be very selfless or self-destructive to pursue such a position.
