Golden era. I think I went something like Burner-quadpro-975J-905T over about 5y. That was the steep section of the driver technology curve. Now they're just rearranging the furniture.

Before that callaway i was actually using a persimmon driver with my balata ball.
These were huge compared to my persimmon...i could hit my persimmon off the deck but once i went to these that was a hugely risky shot to take on... probably because my persimmon was smaller than a modern 3 wood.
Then the new balls came out....it just seemed so much easier as i could hit the new ball with the new driver probably a good
25 yards or more further (once i learned how to hit them best).
I'd still make the pro's hit clubs that size...they would certainly bring those tour averages down a bit.
I bought my 1st clubs out of a mail order were the days eh???

Haha I feel you on the regripping the bubbles. Those and some of the old Yonex bats were the same and having someone bring a set of those in gave me the cold sweats 😅

I took 15 years off from the game between 19 and 34 years old. I left playing a Taylor Made Tour Burner in a time when the Ping Eye 2 was cutting edge tech and Callaway never existed as a company! Rejoined the game with what felt like a saucepan attached to the end of the club with a Callaway FT5. I missed everything in between!

First Driver was the Ping "Blonde" natural colored woods. They were absolute furniture. I still own them. Before I gave them up I re-shafted with graphite to try to keep them in play a bit longer. I did pick up the G10 Ping recently as I really like the non-adapter clubs. The dispersion is tighter and I just like the feel a bit more. Less torque it seems = less side spin.

Can’t remember all the drivers I’ve had. Had Yonnex for a while. They sounded like a Tom and Jerry frying pan over Spike the dogs head. People would stare at the driving range! (Rude)
Also had Wilson Fat Shafts… they were good but I could hit the 3 wood off the tee better than driver. I miss 3 woods having a bit of ‘face’ about them for tee shots. Then moved to a Mizuno driver that had a pink Aldila shaft. That was often a talking point.
Was less complicated back then as we knew SFA about the equipment other than it looked good.

Taylor Made firesole with bubble shaft - my first clubs. Loved the copper color (not the red you described). However, comparison with newer clubs is difficult for me because I have aged from 53 to 75. I hit my TM firesole around 230 yds with a head speed of 104 mph when i changed to the TM Burner. Now I'm down to 85 mph and happy to reach 190 yds with my Ping G30 or more recent Cobra F9.

Really enjoyed the content. Thank you.

My memory at the time was of commercials in the US depicting an "average golfer" hitting the Burner Bubble and hitting it to the 250 yard marker on the driving range and hinting at that being a big drive. I think they were trying to tap into higher handicap golfers that drove the ball 220 to 230 yards and getting them to believe this driver would somehow have them gaining 20-30 yards. Absolutely no memory of the Big Birtha TV spots, but I had the driver and fairway woods and loved them.

I gamed the Callaway Warbird for my first metal driver. Had the matching 3W which I had in the bag for almost 15 years. I ended up with a Mizuno T-Zoid “forged” driver to replace the warbird, but I couldn’t hit a driver to save my life back then and hit that 3W off the tee plenty long enough. Now I need all the new driver tech to get a driver anywhere close to my old 3W distance and fortunately hit driver a lot better now so it has worked out ok.

I loved the bubble shaft. Never really got along with any of the TM drivers. Great big Bertha was my first real name brand club.

Compared to my my old ping woods the Big Bertha appeared massive I remember using my mates and hiting it 30yds past him. Went out and bought one the next week. Currently usung Sim2 driver and Maverick fairways

The best driver is the golfer that practices his drives effectively.

Some brands may have higher quality control... but without a decent swing the brand won't make much of a difference

I used to game a Taylormade bubble shaft fairways (3&5) until last year. I currently use Callaway steelhead plus.

I remember looking with some disdain at the huge, balloon-on-a-stick Great Big Bertha when it came out. Good times!

Steel head III callway 3 &5 Woods still my favourite ever. Same as you didn't like the driver but had a set of the burner irons which were fantastic.

I think the Ti Bubble 2 would be more the Great Big Bertha’s counterpart. The Firesole was more of Taylormade’s budget driver.

Love the older club reviews, really shows how far we've come.

A head to head of Callaway vs Taylormade from each year would be solid.

I was so rubbish with the early metal drivers that i used a 3 wood instead, big bertha plus i think. The modern drivers are great, not sure there's much more they can do with them though, except paint the face red.
