Also vitamins. Rice and pasta don't have vitamin A or vitamin C. This pandemic has made me even more thankful for my chickens my fruit trees and the seeds sprouting in my laundry room!

I hear people saying "if things get bad, I'll plant a garden". Do they not realise that the time is now or when it "gets bad", they will be in for some hungry months till harvest? I wish the government would come out and tell everyone to plant " victory gardens" right now. It would make a huge difference in our coming months. 🤔

I'm growing my own veg for the first time. Lots of seeds on the go but today I went round the garden and picked young nettle tops and wild garlic leaves. Cooked the nettles like spinach and made pesto with the wild garlic. I've a feeling our ancestors used these as full of much needed vitamins and minerals after a winter. Tasted wonderful.

Huw,
This is exactly how 50 years ago we used to be.
Supermarkets have spoilt what people expect to eat. Not what they should be eating.
Great Video. 👍🏻

I bought some sprouting seeds online in bulk at a great price. They are quite tasty in soups, salads, and sandwiches. My favorites are Broccoli and Mung Bean. They do not require soil or special grow lights. Just a couple mason jars on your kitchen counter. I was using a piece of window screen for the draining and found my lids were rusting. I've just recently upgraded to screened plastic lids sold online just for this purpose, they work great.

I started my Brexit veg garden last year, little knowing it would quickly become my pandemic economic meltdown garden so soon. 😧

Its good to think outside of the box! I was thinking of making borders around my garden beds with lettuce and cabbage. Also planting veggies and herbs in amongst my flower beds. I will keep the unruly mints, thyme and other herbs contained in pots. I am shredding paper to put in the bottom of my pots to compost and retain water in the dry months. Its always good to look at the space available in the garden with fresh eyes. Stay healthy! i enjoy your programs.

So very happy to see your video pop up. Thank you, Huw, for the encouragement, the tips, and the book you have written. Keep up the good work. For those of us learning to garden or advancing in our skills, these videos are vital, and they keep us on track! Watching from La Ciotat, France, where we are on day 5 of confinement, and garden has just leaped into shape. Where there’s a will there is a way. Good wishes to all and “Bon courage.”

If we get locked down its the perfect time for a gardener right now. I'm personally fully stocked up (before this) on seeds every type and compost ect. I always keep my old compost from the years before too and just add lots of random stuff to it as a test soil 😄 I added a full pot of coffee and random things I think of it worked well so far. Might help some one save a few penny's next year if not this year.

I'm so pleased to have found your channel and am appreciating all your tips and advice. Although retired, I am a complete novice to gardening. We moved into our home at the end of June last year. We have an amazing garden that has been untended for the past five years. There is a greenhouse and walked garden with raised beds. I had to cut my way through the brambles to get into the greenhouse initially! We've since managed to tidy it up and replace broken glass panes. I started in July by planting tomatoes, cucumber, courgette and chilli pepper. In a small area in the walled garden. We enjoyed a number of cucumbers and tomatoes. The courgettes didn't do well. The chilli pepper produced a few fruits, which only turned red after I picked them and put them in the kitchen window. The plant was still looking healthy in October, so I put it in a large pot and it has wintered in our conservatory, producing around 7 red chilli peppers before Christmas! Over the last month, it has produced flowers and now there are more fruits at various stages of growth! I'm thinking of replanting it in the raised bed in the greenhouse, in a few weeks time, as I read it likes to be hot and humid! I'm also hoping to grow sweet peppers alongside it. I dug over most of the outside raised beds before Christmas, adding some compost to the main area, only to find that our whole garden is infested with lesser celandine, including the raised beds. So, I've spent many hours over the past couple of months digging them out, being careful to remove the whole thing! Just started on another bed (which I've not previously dug over) and am battling bramble roots as well as lesser celandine! Your video about potting seeds was really helpful and I'm getting everything ready in the greenhouse, so I can start doing that. I'm checking overnight temperatures in the greenhouse (I living in Letchworth Garden City, just north of London) and am cautious about starting too soon, as the overnight temperatures have been getting down to zero. I have planted some new potatoes outside, also some garlic plants. Hoping to add carrots, onions and peas shortly. Sorry to make this so long - but you did say on your video that you had more time on your hands at the moment ;). Anyway, this seems to be the time to major on gardening and self sufficiency. Thank you so much for all you are doing to help. Stay safe! With all good wishes, Liz Beardmore

Great work, Huw! Always informative. While most backyard gardeners won't be able to become self sufficient, every bit helps and I find that the enjoyment of picking your own vegetables is priceless in these uncertain times. Take care.

I purchased your book and have really enjoyed the no money needed tips. I had no idea how much I could send on gardening to save money! Thanks for helping me rethink both products and procedures. I'm already planting out my leeks, onions, kale and brussel sprouts. it's a little early but my indoor grow space is needed for tomatoes and peppers 😁. Gardening fills the days home with brain activity, physical, activity, fresh air and sunshine. Good job spread it the encouraging outlook.

I invested in a poly tunnel at the start of this year and started everything going a little earlier (not excessively), so I've got lettuce, spinach, beetroot, yacon and pak choi doing really well in there. In the garden beds (not raised) I already had kale and salad, so when the proverbial hit the fan, I was very grateful to have all this. The supermarkets are well stocked, but I haven't left the house for more than a week now, as France is in lock down. I've had the opportunity to really work on the vegetable garden this year, and I still don't want to rush things and suffer pests and poor growing, but I did get plenty of extra raddish, beetroot, pak choi, greens and peas on the go! Also blessed to have many berries, bushes, fruit trees and wild foods (purslane, dandelion, nettles, sticky weed, herb robert etc. which we use).

I spent most of the winter months researching and preparing our garden here in 7b. And now we are looking forward to our harvests of leafy greens, radishes, and then summer crops that are all well underway. Also, I built a compost bin inspired by your video. Thanks, Huw!

Thank you, Huw. I really appreciate the encouragement and reassurance. I've just potted up some tomato seedlings, too. My peppers (shishito and bell) have germinated, and I have a small number of leeks. Tried multi-sowing them, but they're not liking the set-up, I think. But I'll have my hand at another batch of them. You and Charles Dowding, and Mark from Self-Sufficient Me are such excellent leaders and teachers. Thanks for all that you do!
