How to 'do your research'!

For real, I thought this was a skit about "those" haters that ask you to "do your research, babe 😉" about medicine, vaccine, essential oil and stuff.

My old PCP would share helpful facts from recent medical literature he’d read every time I went in, things like when certain vitamin supplements are actually helpful or not, updated guidelines on how often to get preventative screenings, etc. I really appreciated that he took time to share what he was learning with me (relevant topics to me), & gave me the chance to ask questions about it.

It was all framed as “this might be useful to know, & guidelines may change as more research is published in the future”. It helped me think of medicine as a field where new knowledge is actively shaping care & recommendations, not as something set in stone with all the answers. That perspective encouraged me to ask questions & take an active role in being informed about my health, & not feel confused about the fact that sometimes guidance does change.

As a doctor, I would be cautious of such an app. Synthesizing knowledge is a great idea, but some things to consider are: risk of bias, the certainty of the evidence, who funded the studies, heterogeneity of the participants in the study, etc. Is the app also providing readers with these answers? There are several factors that can influence if we use the results in practice. Not all evidence should be translated into practice.

That actually sounds really cool. When I try to research stuff about skincare, I just get so lost like 4 sentences into the study I'm trying to read because I don't understand all the medical jargon. I might actually download this! Thanks Doc Schmidt!
