I watched this video in 2020 and am now buying up land for unrelated reasons.

I used to work for a really rich guy that owned acres of land, and when shit started going down he told us if things got really bad he was pay us to stay here and keep his property safe. It made me realize this is how kingdoms started. Folks would band together under some really wealthy dude with the means to feed and protect us and our families. We would be super loyal to him because he essentially saved us and our families from being wiped out in the chaos, and we’d had gladly died for this dude who was essentially just our boss at the time.

I almost wanted it to happen. Working in a cubicle is way less exciting.

I think it would be better to have the military directly under you ruling over even the aristocratic class. And let them be the primary land owners. Then use the taxes collected from the working class and aristocracy to pay the military in order to ensure their loyalty. That would help keep you in power. Plus I think making your kingdom relatively small would make it more manageable and make it easier to allow everyone to have a decent living situation. Like maybe at a population of 400-700 people. That would help prevent rebellion and increase and maintain your legitimacy as ruler in the eyes of everyone in the kingdom. Also make the military a conscript class for anyone to enlist in, making everyone patriotic of the kingdom. And make sure that the kingdom is fortified. Your kingdom would essentially be a small city or palace state. But I think that would be a lot better in the long run than trying to rule over a huge empire or something.

Could you do something like "how to make a country"? I've been curious for a while about how we made these arbitrary demarcations on land and decided that this invisible line made them Them and us Us. (Like: How come China, with it's hundreds of distinct cultures and societies, is one big country, whereas Eastern Europe is basically the hors devours of countries?)

But... what of the role of women? Gaining land through marriages? and the role of religious representatives to "legitimize" births, marriages? But... I love how you represent the people in your demonstration, the people, at the end of the day are the ones who have the power (even if they choose to give it up for protection, roads and such )
