Lost Villages of Hull: Newland

On this episode of the Lost Villages of Hull, I look at a part of West Hull that's well-known and fascinating, and was spared much of the cramped, industrial horror of Sculcoates by being the home of many of Hull's wealthiest and most powerful people; Newland.

If you're anything like me, viewing historical Ordnance Survey maps side by side with modern satellite views will certainly eat up far too much of your time!

The pink floyd blaring out on the avenues was me. I live on Marlborough Avenue!

In the 60's a double deck bus used to take us from Blundell St school to the playing field behind St Johns church. A few of us were seen as no potential so were left to kick a ball around on our own. In the following decade I attended Cottingham Rd training college and became a teacher where I had to teach among other things - football skills. Who'd have known. I also minded a furniture shop on Newland Ave in the early 70's and bought Hornby trains from Sutton Model Shop and had a student flat in Wellesley Ave. Now we live near Vancouver BC.

I was a wee baby boy in the early 1960’s in the Avenues before moving to Cottingham. I love this video. Thank you.

Long time subscriber and viewer, first time to make a comment. Every time I hear your theme music, there's a part that reminds me of Ecstacy of Gold by Ennio Morricone. In this video, the music between 0:21s and 0:27s. Adjust the speed a little but keep the variation in notes.... Once you hear it, you can't un-hear it....maybe it's just me. Anyway, loving your work and have passed it on to family and friends who are now part of your audience 🙂
