Poorest Cities in the UK – Kingston Upon Hull

Why is Hull so poor? We have produced a video about the poorest cities in the UK. You’ve likely seen also what we or others have done about rankings of British cities as regards affordability, livability, beauty, crime, depravity, and cost of living. One thing is common in all these videos if you have seen them. Kingston Upon Hull has been ranked, not among the best cities to live in, the most beautiful cities, or the safest, but among the most deprived, the most dangerous, and the poorest. Enough has probably not been said in those videos to convince many fans of the city. That’s why we are devoting this video to only Kingston Upon Hull as one of the poorest cities in the United Kingdom.
About Kingston Upon Hull
Please permit us to come down to the level of those who may not have seen the video we did about the city and those who need to know one or two things about the city we’re about to analyze. Thus, we’re starting by introducing the city of Kingston Upon Hull to you. This is a port city with a unitary authority type of government located in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Usually abbreviated to Hull, the city lies upon the River Hull, its namesake, at its confluence with the Humber Estuary, 40 kilometers inland from the North Sea, 80 kilometers east of Leeds, 55 kilometers southeast of York, and 87 kilometers northeast of Sheffield.
The total land area of the city that got its city status in 1897 is 71.5 square kilometers. Going by the latest official population estimate of 259,778 which ranked it 64th in the country, the city’s population density is fair at 3,633 people per square kilometer. In the whole borough of Yorkshire, not just the ceremonial county of East Riding, and the Humber region, it’s the fourth-largest city, even though very poor. People from Kingston Upon Hull are called Hullensians.
Summary of Several Rankings
An article recently published in The Guardian international entitled, “To Hull and back: the rebirth of Britain’s poorest city,” quotes Naomi Clayton of the Centre for Cities as agreeing that Hull fits in the national picture of the second poorest city in less than a decade ago. She reeled out a set of damning statistics, including the city having the lowest rate of employment and the highest ratio of Job Seekers’ Allowance claimants. She also said Hull is the UK’s poorest city in terms of the weekly wage and that it has a major skills shortage and low rates of business startups. According to this official, it has a high crime rate and a very low percentage of residents with, at least, NVQ4 qualifications.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also indicates that this city has one of the lowest house prices for all types of property among towns and cities in England and Wales. The ONS also ranks Hull very low in areas of the number of businesses, industries, and trades. That’s why its data, covering employment rates, earnings, and hours of work, the body says Hull is a poor city.
Other figures given by a highly credible Legatum Institute, a charity based in London, that releases the annual global Prosperity Index are also damning for Kingston Upon Hull. According to the Institute, the city performed poorly below standard and expectation on prosperity in 6 of the 7 pillars of the Index. It adds that the data marks a deep-woven pattern of poverty and deprivation and it goes beyond economic circumstances. The Institute further states that the city was found to be the worst for essential services overall and it ranks second worst for schools and education centers and third worst for the fire-fighting staff strength.

It's never dull in hull. I got my degree at Hull University 30 years ago, worked in Hull, and now I've retired in Hull. Nice people, some quirky shops and pubs, the deepest aquarium in the world, 3 theatres, a major art gallery that held the Turner prize last year, and of course Hull KR. Come visit, walk around the marina, see the fishing museum, relax in the Cafés after shopping in the old town.

Completely disagree. I was an international student in Hull university from 2017-2020. I come from China and used to live in some super cities among the world like Shanghai, Tokyo, San Francisco, Moscow and London…I drink too much this moment and suddenly I missing Hull so much, missing the university, the Newland avenue, Asda of kingswood, and the Hull train station …Hull is a fantastic city with its own unique culture, human’s life actually is your memory, Hull left me lots of memories especially I feel be respected here, during 3 years life here I almost never suffered from racist, besides some naughty kid. However in other cities it’s normal to come with some strange people hold their crazy opinions.what the most important thing Hull left to me is Love, the real Love, people in Hull are very kind and friendly . Now I am living in the opposite place on the Earth I usually buy something from Hull from EBay or Amazon although the prices is nearly 7 times expensive than local but I am still willing to pay, when these ltems delivered me, it always let my heart warm. I stand with Hull, all times of my life!

Got halfway through and stopped watching. It's basically the same old ill-informed stereotypical nonsense that keeps being re-hashed. The facts: Hull is the only major city in the UK whose statistics on wealth, crime, education etc do NOT include those of the more affluent suburbs. Consequently the figures are skewed downwards. In other words Hull's statistics are based only on the inner city and are therefore in no way comparable with statistics from other cities. You may as well judge London on a visit to the East End. It's nonsense. Hull has 800 years of rich maritime history and the centre, especially the Old Town and marina, is as beautiful as any in the UK. Advice to those who write this bolleaux - try researching (and preferably visiting) before sticking stuff like this on the internet.

As someone who came to Hull to the University 30+ years ago and stayed I am slightly annoyed by this video! Yes Hull has its issues like a lot of Northern largish cities but it also is a very quirky city with a unique history. There are some really nice areas, the old town, the Marina and newly developed fruit market area, the bars and restaurants on Princes Avenue. I've always found most Hullensians to be warm, friendly and down to earth!! Leave our 'Ull alone!!!.

I was born and grew up in Hull. Back in the 1950's-1970's is was a proud, clean and vibrant city. The centre was a beautiful place of flowerbeds, fountains, fine buildings and great shops and stores. Hammonds, Bladons, C & A, BHS, M & S, Woolworths, and a host of other fine retailers have left empty spaces in their passing. The fishing industry was betrayed, the docking industry was betrayed, and a long list of other manufacturers such as Humbrol, Priestmans, Marfleet Refining & Smith & Nephew have either vanished or largely turned their backs, adding to the decline. Trendy eateries can only do so much, and they need patrons with money, not the cash-strapped unemployed. Of course, for many years, it's had a Labour council, and they're far more obsessed with spending money than generating wealth. Even so, as someone who has lived in London for the last 35 years, Hull and its environs still have a lot going for them...

I've lived in Kingston-upon-Hull since 1997. Your video may be accurate statistically; however, you've missed a lot.
Hull has been an historically successful city, being home to one of the world's biggest fishing fleets and its accompanying support industries. The fleet was severely decimated after the "cod war" of 1962 and subsequently destroyed by the UK's membership of the EU! Architecturally, this is one of the most stunningly beautiful cities in the world in my well-travelled opinion.
If you look at a map of the UK, you'll find Kingston-upo-Hull half way up on the right. Well served by road, rail, air and sea; it should be among the wealthiest cities per head of population. So, why is it so poor and deprived? In my opinion, the answer may be found in the nearly 60 year Labour rule! I tried to open businesses in Hull on no less than 5 separate occasions. Each time my efforts to bring employment and some prosperity were thwarted by what; in my earnest opinion; was nothing short of institutional corruption throughout both the elected and unelected mebers of the City Council. On two occasions, I was blatantly approached and subjected to demands for quite large sums of money to ensure my business plans could go ahead! Kingston-upon-Hull is full of very good people, willing and able to work hard and earn well. Lately, the City Council has been hard at work desperately trying to choke the city to death! With unnecessary bus-lanes, cycle-tracks which are rarely used and pedestrian zones deliberately designed to cut shops off from public access. Property has devalued, businesses have closed, the big stores have packed up and left. These include C&A, Marks & Spencer, Hammonds, Debenhams, the list goes on. For all that, Hull is full of excellent people; warm and welcoming in every way. For the people alone, I'm happy here.

Hull might be poor in cash but it's people are rich in Spirit, Kindness & Resilience. Hull was the second most bombed city in England in the last war. It has risen from that & has some of the nicest, kindest people. I lived there for 2.5 yrs left there January 2023 because the weather drove me away. Yorkshire people are some of the most hard working people in England. They are Welcoming People🌺

Hullensians 🤣🤣
You gotta attend some places and do some actual research my dude, not just check stuff on Google, a lot of this is wildly inaccurate.

This video is total nonsense and the comments are too. The statistics and percentages quoted are based on council estates, not the whole city, less than 28% of residential land use in the city.

From a person who lives in Hull and has done for years, I understand the idea of making this video but if you're going to make a point about the "poor" of the city and everything else, you should at least speak about the good as well.

Most cities have boundaries that are significantly bigger than the actual built up area, which means that the wealthier suburbs are included in their own statistics.

In Hull, the suburbs are actually officially administered by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and not the Hull City Council.

This means that the suburbs that are part of the entire built up area, are excluded in the statistics. So in reality the population is more like 325, 000/350, 000 and not 260, 000, and it means that the wealthier households in the suburbs are not included which lowers the average house prices/educational achievements/unemployment rates/health statistics/crime/household income etc.

If Hull had boundaries that included places like Ferriby etc the city would be significantly wealthier and better educated and safer and about 30% larger in population size.

Hull as been the least funded city since the 2nd World War our schools let kids learn what they want not what our country needs and people don't want 0 hour contract as all the work in Hull is agency work.

I’ve lived in the Beverley area (approximately 8 miles north of Hull) for the last 26 years. Beverley is a lovely, affluent and thriving market town and in comparison Hull feels like it’s gone backwards over the same time. There are probably many contributing factors but I personally feel Hull’s hard line Labour councillors do the city no favours. On the other hand the East Riding of Yorkshire council, based in Beverley, seem far more progressive and ambitious. I personally would love to see Hull thrive as at its heart it’s a good city with decent people, but I can’t help but feel it’s been badly governed for decades.

If you’ve never lived or visited the place, you have no business describing it. Hull isn’t so bad, it’s at par with most cities in the UK. There are far worse cities/towns in the UK.

Hull is NOT in the East Riding of Yorkshire!

This video was done by someone who is just saying what someone else who doesn't know anything about Hull said.
