I just bought a new Danelectro 12 string electric and I love it!

I played an Ovation 12-string almost exclusively for over 20 years. The sound is so full and beautiful. I also had a Martin 6-string, but the Ovation was my "go to" instrument. Unfortunately, someone let it rest on the side of a bed and it fell over. The head hit the ground and it split in half and splintered badly. I miss playing it. I would replace it in a heartbeat if I had the money, but for now, the 6-string will have to do.

I keep my 12 strings tuned below standard pitch to be nice to it, especially if it only has 1 truss rod.(my humble opinion) capo 2 frets if you want to be standard, and I have broken octave g string bringing it up to pitch

is the purpose to make them sound like 2 guitars playing?

My husband played a 12 string as his main guitar. Beautiful, full sound.

My first acoustic was a Yamaha 12 string, I was a 90's kid obsessed with jangly indie pop, The Byrds and all that. Honestly, never had much issue with the tuning, unlike my various Gibson electrics. Only issue is one of the top B or E strings tend to break very easily.

I got a 12 string a couple of months ago. It’s an adjustment for sure. But, I am really loving its harmonies and full sound.

BTW: Another con is using a capo. You don’t need to as much because the tone is higher anyway. A regular “flat” capo does not work as only the thicker strings get adequately compressed. You need a Compensated capo that has little “teeth” that reach the octave strings on the EADG strings. A little more money and takes some finesse to put it on properly. Worth it, though.

No actual 12 strings were harmed in the making of this video.
