💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

💙 Massive thanks to our amazing team of carpenters that never let us down and continue to amaze us at every step of the process: Toninho, Zeca, Hélio, Claiton, William, Nezo, Nico, Beto and Luiz. YOU ARE LEGENDS!

Hey guys! We want to know: have you ever climbed a mast before? Would you do it? What is your relationship with heights?🪁

You really need to change the anchor to a more modern spade type of anchor. This anchors have a scary tendency to suddenly letting go. Just take a look at some of the anchor holding tests at YouTube.

Dont forget you need a stop fixing for your anchor chain and or rode ...or first time you try finding the bottom in deep water you could loose the lot.
You also need to be able to rig a snubber bridle to absorb the jerking on the hull in rough conditions. With the wt and size of Yabba thats going to need to be really substantial.

Learn how to set up a snubber line when anchoring or you will learn very quickly why most bow rollers are meant to be installed in line with the boat.

You were close. Lug Nuts/ Lag Bolts, whatever, we get the idea. Just please never call Fenders Bumpers or rubber thingies. You know several more languages than me so the conversion from one to another is a feat in itself. When I watched the very first video of this boat I definitely cringed because so many underestimate the amount of work a wooden boat demands. Rebuilding a rotten boat is basically twice the effort of just building a new one but you guys did it. Finding your crew of boat builders was a huge blessing. Y'all's involvement in the build will pay big time later because you know your boat inside and out. She will be out sailing soon enough. This is about the only video I look forward to seeing every Sunday morning.. keep up the good attitude because the finishing touches can be a hard obstacle..

Retrieving, lifting uber heavy windlass: Nezo
I’ll say it again, Nezo is The Man ! 👍☺️

Its amazing that after all the building that has been done, your knowledge and terminology concerning boats seems nonexistent?
Sorry!

Don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it but your videos don’t need that awful frenetic music track.

Under the cleats and fittings should be sealed waterproof and the holes for bolts and the heads holding them down sealed with butyle tape as water will penetrate and rot your holes out then the wood under them as it will hold water. Its as important as caulking the deck seams.. especially in a wet humid climate.

You may want stainless collars in all thru holes for ropes. A flange on both sides you screw in..
How many tons of chain, add dragging and pull.
Chain X pull X dragging = x tons of shear strength.... if those little bolts, are pull on. How many tons of pull before they pull out of the wood. ( better beef it up. ) not with washers. But metal plate with holes, then washers. A failed runaway anchor chair, would RIP you a big hole in your boat.

I hope you will consider investing in a newer anchor design such as Rocna, a secure anchor is vital. The Claw/Bruce anchor holds well in softer conditions, also it looks small for the size/weight/profile of Yaba.

Why no screws? I see them using nails for everything. Problem is, nails have a tendency to back out as the wood moves and flexes. Screws hold strong and don’t back out. So why are they not using screws everywhere instead of nails? I think that will be regretted later. Better keep a hammer handy to constantly pound nails back in.

Welded horn cleats should have the base plate welded and all welds smoothed to prevent line wear. The cleat shown is already corroding due to lack of passivation and the gap where the threaded rod passes through the plate provides a great place for crevice corrosion.

Your baby yaba is really looking great, next you’ll have to learn how to climb your mast and set your rigging also I’m looking forward to seeing M P teaching Roberta how to dive, that’ll mean both boats at sea together what a great sight that’ll be

Are you going to rebuild and grease the windless while it’s out?

Have you ever heard of boat soup? it's a combination of varnish, boiled linseed oil and Japan Driver. I'm not sure of the proportions of each though.

OMG! Ben start doing your research on nautical terms. It just drives me crazy that you don’t bother doing research on your own boat. Get it together dude.

Great to see a bit of hardware going back on. Before the final fit you should give it all a real good polish, .nice and shiny. ❤ great video 2x👍 for the windlass you could add an idler wheel on the Port side to change direction of any lines .

Get rid of that anchor.
That whole arrangement is a bit of a hack IMHO.
Are you going to seal all the holes you have made with epoxy to stop water ingress and rot? Through bolts threaded are much better than coach bolts!

bad position for this winch, but best possible place. the ankerchain will chaf (?) on the bow. and put some polisched rope guide in the holes or you will chaf your ropes very fast . and till now i dont see how you will get overcoming seewater or rain from the deck .
