Have you ever thought what would have happened if Michael was taken out, leaving Fredo, who was the underboss in charge, what if Hyman Roths plan did indeed follow through and Michael wasn’t that lucky. What exactly would have happened to the Corleone Family dynasty?

Roth had orchestrated such an eloquent plan, cornering the most powerful criminal empire, the world had ever seen, But as we know his plan initially failed and was altered, to accomodate the new circumstances. But what if Hyman Roth actually succeeded the first time, leaving Fredo as the last Corleone member in charge. What would happen and How would the Corleone mafia empire look, under the reign of Don Fredo?

We discussed in one of our previous videos, why Hyman Roth wanted to destroy the Corleone family, but we didn’t unveil exactly how he was going to achieve his goal.
Roths plan was very elaborate and had been in the works for years, but here is the summary.
In the years following the death of his close friend and business partner, Moe Greene, Roth accepted the situation and continued on as usual. But he had never truly forgotten about this and swore to avenge his friend. However Roth was very Machiavellian and extremely intelligent. He did indeed know exactly who was responsible, but he waited for the perfect opportunity.
And perfect opportunity would soon present itself. Hyman Roth and his right hand man, Johnny Ola, had major interests in Las Vegas and so when the young and ambitious Michael Corleone made his presence known in Nevada, it seemed that fate had finally gave Roth the opportunity he was yearning for. But it was not going to be easy and so he began implementing his master plan.

I actually like Fredo and feel sorry for him, but if he'd ever been made Don, the Family would've ceased to exist within a couple months at most. The mafia's full of predators and Fredo's a prey animal.

In Godfather 3, Connie actually was the acting Don while Michael was in the hospital. Vincent and Al came to her for permission to kill Zaza, and after considering it she said "DO IT!" Only then did they feel authorized to act.

Even Connie has more balls than Fredo - and she doesn't have any. For me it comes down to one thing: what does Tom Hagen do? He is the kingmaker in this scenario. Either Fredo takes him on as an adviser and listens to him, or Tom ends up staging a coup d'tat. There is no scenario in which Fredo defeats Hyman Roth alone.

It's not clear in the movie but in the book Michael intentionally played weak for over a year (per Vito's instruction) just to be underestimated and have the opportunity to wipe everyone out in one swoop. Tessio betrayed Michael because Barzini was on the brink of taking over all of his territory.

Consider this scenario. Fredo is devastated by Michael's assassination and vows to protect the family. He turns to Tom Hagen, who grew up with Fredo and knows his limitations. Fredo gives Tom the task of rebuilding the family by recruiting a new generation of street smart wise guys. The duo works. Fredo becomes more cunning but continues to play dumb to outsiders while a powerful Tom works behind the scenes to make the Corleone's more agile. Roth never realizes the new dynamics and succumbs to a heart attack, real or perceived.

The original Godfather III script was Tom Hagen challenging Michael but they would not pay Robert Duvall so instead we got some jumbled script with George Hamilton and Sophia Coppola.
