Connecting to Mint 19.3 and Ubuntu 20.04 using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) | Practical IT

Episode 187. Testing out XRDP in 2020. We are using Linux Mint 19.3 and Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fosa (daily preview from 1/5/2020).

ATTENTION MINT 19.x USERS:

Replace the commands used in the video with the following:

sudo apt install xrdp xorgxrdp-hwe-18.04 -y

I have tested today (6/29/2020) with Mint 20 Cinnamon, and the original commands used in this video work flawlessly in the new version

NOTE: As you can see in the second half of the video, this is not working as well on Mint as it does on Ubuntu. I've tested on VMs of Mint 19.3, both Cinnamon and Mate versions and in each case the VirtualBox interface shows it being "stuck" on a black screen with a blinking cursor. You ARE able to login via RDP, but you cannot login directly through the VirtualBox interface.

I have NOT tested on physical hardware!

NOTICE: There are no guarantees expressed or implied that the procedure demonstrated in this video will work on YOUR system. It is HIGHLY recommended that you A) have a backup and B) have OpenSSH-server installed on your system PRIOR to trying these commands.

In linux mint 19. 3 you should install the following
xrdp
xorgxrdp-hwe-18.04
I installed them from the software manager and it works without any problem and no freeze after reboot
dont install xorgxrdp

@Famha Your hint rescued me. Following the way of jeremy my fresh mint 19.3 system broke. Now I have rdp access from my thin client. Great.

After this installation I lost the default desktop and mouse and keyboard no longer work.

Hi Jeremy, video was helpful, however upon trying to access the linux mint 19.3 pc from a windows 10 pc I just get a black screen. the thinclient_drives icon appears on desktop of linux mint pc but that is the only observable effect. would appreciate your input.

Hello Jeremy. I tried your exact procedure for LM 19.3 Cinnamon and after reboot it locks up at the login screen. Any ideas what is causing this? If I do the install minus the abi-23 and core packages xRDP does not work but the computer is fine. Thanks for your opinion in advance! I love LM Cinnamon and its my distro of choice but due to this I ended up just installing Ubuntu 20.04 where it works fine.. Hoping you can help me.
