This video will show you how to install ESXi 5.0 on a drive with an existing ESX 4.1 installation and VMFS datastore present. ESXi 5.0 uses the same installer for fresh installations and upgrades. If the installer finds an existing ESX 4.x or ESXi 4.x installation, it allows you to performs an upgrade.

During this upgrade, the ESXi installer will offer several options for preserving or discarding existing ESX host settings and VMFS datastores. If an earlier version of ESX and VMFS was found by the installer, it will show you the selected storage device contains an installation of ESX and a VMFS datastore. You can choose whether to upgrade or install and overwrite the existing installation. You can also choose whether to preserve or overwrite the existing VMFS datastore. After upgrading from ESX 4.1 to ESXi 5.0, only the relevant settings will be migrated.

Hi Eric i was also interested in the esxi5 version. Were can i find it because its not on the vmware website.. Will i need another license for upgrading from esxi4.1 to esxi 5

Keep in mind. If you are using iSCSI Jumbo frames with multiple connections to the SAN, you can't use the same subnet for the console and those ports anymore. Really screws up the any SRM type setup you may have had configured. Each VC now must have 2 nics.

If you're running an HP server, you can upgrade using iLO. Simply connect to iLO from your laptop and mount the ISO

In the VMware upgrade guide it mentions that if you have a SAN connected, to remove the fibre cables before starting the upgrade and specifically mentions nit disabling the cards in the bios. Is that fully necessary or just to remove the risk of accidentally installing and overwriting a production datastore with VMs on it?

Its a nice simple video, but im looking to see, if i boot my server backup, will my datastore be setup still and could i start the vm's back up like nothing happened?
