New Hyundai Kona v's New Peugeot e2008 - Who wins the battle of the new generation?

Hyundai's Kona Electric and Peugeot's e2008 have always been two compact family crossovers that have been firm favourites of ours. However, they were starting to show their age in places, especially in the light of some new and fierce competition. Thankfully, their makers have seen fit to wield the surgeon's scalpel, with the Kona being a completely new model, the Peugeot receiving a heavy facelift. More range, more tech, more efficiency. More desirable? Bryan subjects them to a thorough twin test to deliver the verdict that actual car buyer's trust when it comes to deciding on their next EV - the AutoEV one.

AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Great review, ordered the 2008GT in selenium grey with the Evissa wheels, can’t wait for it to arrive! Been waiting 4 months

Good review. One point though and it’s an important one. The e2008 has always had a heat pump, and it works pretty well. I’ve always had pretty good efficiency from my own car too, over 4.2 M/KW in summer and not a lot under 4 in the winter. For our own driving, our 214 Mile range has always proved very adequate for our day to day use. We’ve done three trips requiring charges on the way with no problem!

in fairness the Peugeot seems a bit quieter, but think the KONA is on 19" wheels which others say are not the way to go. We will see if the Premium can be got with 17" here in Australia. Still waiting for release date here.

Thanks, a very useful video, the big differences for me is that Hyundai have fixed the big 5 issues of the old Kona - Road noise, Boot space, Rear legroom, Body Style and iPedal, whilst the e2008 just seems to be a cosmetic face lift. On the Kona, you missed the electric driver's seat that moves back to get in out and then forward to your remembered driving position. Note this isn't the memory seat option that remembers a couple of driving positions, but an N-level feature of all electric drivers seats. You also missed the individual front-seat climate controls, the sync button to the left of the climate display, but I'm not sure whether the base model gets that or just the Ultimate.

Hi and thanks so much, just got home with my new Peugeot e2008 gt in grey, have been watching lots of reviews on them and your video told me more about the car I just purchased than all of them put together, so again thanks tons.

There is no competition, the Kona is better in every measurable metric. Stellantis were phoning it in with this platform. It's nowhere near competitive enough.

The Kona is very good but just too expensive. Some of the excellent features of the old premium spec have moved to the top of the range ultimate spec. That's a double whammy and is actually a sneaky hidden price rise.

I haven’t notice a lack power even in eco on my model.

Thank you for the thorough test, presented as always in a pleasant, sympathetic way. In conclusion, I miss an important disadvantage of the Peugeot. A heat pump is not available. This will have a very negative impact on the driving range, especially in the winter months.

I’d love to know your opinion on the kona vs the Atto 3?

I have an existing e2008, 1970 model and very happy but would like a better range.

When you set adaptive cruise on its one pedal, great for 20/30 in town and will auto stop if the car in front does!

I'm biased because I own one, but I can't see the Peugeot coming close to the Kona tbh

We have a 2022 e2008GT, really nice car but two little points that would stop me buying another (if the new spec one is the same), 1 The range, in the cold weather its about 140miles with the climate set to 21 degrees auto, that means i need to charge every 100mile so i have some left in the 'tank' for family emergencies . and 2, a issue that boarders on dangerous i think, when i stop at a large busy roundabout the gaps to pull out are short and you need to go when you go, even in sports mode we find a lag before the power kicks in, rather like the old turbo lag in a ICE car. i feel uncomfortable in such situations, foots on the floor and still slow to take off, in fact on a dry straight road it is impossible to spin the wheels on foot to the floor acceleration from lights even in sports mode, my old 1.4 Vitara could do that .
i see then new version has a better range (not by a lot really but worth while) and the motor is more powerful but still not sure about the acceleration till i try one. i hope its better .

Really like the Kona, but as a Kia owner of 10 years, also thinking about Kia Niro EV. What do you think is the better?

I've seen several facelifted e-2008 GTs as low as 30k in the UK market. Why is there such a big difference compared to the official price?

Massive range disparity. (which negates slower charging speeds to an extent or possibly completely). Better rear legroom. Much better 0-60. Price almost the same when comparing similar trim levels. Better warranty. No contest. At all. MG, BYD, Kia will be competition for this but not the Peugot.
(And the nail in the coffin, the piano keys on the Peugot dash look like they rammed in a 1970's cassette player they found in a junk shop)
