Learning Synthesis with Pure Data Series 01 Lesson 06 - Making an ADSR Envelope Module

Description

In the previous lessons, we made a MIDI input module and a carrier oscillator module. Now that we have sound triggered by MIDI, it is time to control turning notes on and off with MIDI as well as providing an amplitude shape in the form of an envelope. A common envelope type in synthesis is an ADSR envelope, which controls attack, decay, sustain, and release, and that is what we are going to make in this lesson.

Thank you Dr. Morris! I am learning a lot about PD this summer thanks to these videos. I am a music student and we have an Electro Acoustic Ensemble that I will be in next semester. I think my professor will be really impressed if I can finish this tutorial before school starts. Can't wait to continue on to other lessons!

I finally visited your website (May 2019). It may interest you to know you've made a lot more stuff.

I'm grateful for your lessons.

Hello there!

Having a go at PD and I'm really enjoying your video tutorials.

Though I'm having a bit of a problem with getting the ADSR working. Still not successful after following the instructions in this video and trying to mirror the patching from your .pd file "adsr~".

I have encountered a few problems earlier during the tutorial that might help (you) indicate what is wrong:
- I'm not able to visualize the wave forms in the array that is named "$0-display" in the oscillator carrier file. The wave form is however displayed in the "$0-display" array if I just connect a message box containing the value of a MIDI-note (65 for example) into each of the boxes that contains the necessary parts to create each wave form.
- I don't get any indications of values in my inlet velocity measurement in a .pd file corresponding to yours called "adsr~".

My theory is that each of these problems are caused by the previous problem. Since I'm a complete newbie at PD, that is all i'm able to figure out...

I would really appreciate some help to get this working.

/Hugo

I'm not hearing any of the audio from PD coming through. Was it in the recording?
