To quote Simone Giertz:
"The easiest way to be at the top of your field is to chose a very small field."

That nails it with why originality is key.

My recommendations more or less line up... but here's my list:
1. Creativity - What makes it different from other channels? What brings in the viewers
2. Passion / Determination / Enjoyment - The most important. Do you enjoy making videos about this topic? If so... how much? A little or a lot?
3. Work Ethic
4. Consistency - Keeping the viewers happy and engaged!
5. NO CLICKBAIT and Don't draw out videos too long
6. Production value - Not necessary (as shown by Shannon but it can help)
7. Expertise - How knowledgeable or skilled in that Field

You don't need everything in the list, but the more you have the better it will be for your success. Just give it a try and as long as you enjoy it... then that's all you need. Very little people get popular instantly. It takes time to get there.

My thing is, I'm so good at timing that i started a hockey channel the week they decide to pause the season lol.

I found both of these channels thanks to my love of hockey combined with my enjoyment of statistics and deep observations and insights regarding loads of different topics, but heavily leaning towards hockey and other sport. However I have always stayed because of how down to earth, honest, and forthright you are. Anyone can attract an audience briefly, but it’s only the truly dedicated and motivated can keep it. Thank you for everything you do, and thank you for being a wonderful person as well

Great video on showing everything on what to expect and hypotheticals. On the journey of growing on YouTube myself.

I'd say the problem I've had on my travel channel (Modern Travel Guide) is consistency, and part of that is due to depression, while some is just lack of planning. I've heard lots of YouTubers say planning ahead is key to maintain the consistency. Don't be like me!

One thing that sticks with me is that you have to like what you're doing! As someone who's watched a lot of YouTubers, I've seen people admit that they've lost their drive. I think it's a lot better to admit it than continue to do something you don't enjoy. As an ASMR fan, I've seen it happen. They don't want to whisper anymore! But usually, they do find their passion again. You have to remember that YouTube is a fickle thing and there will be many ups and downs.

Underserved: That's why THG does well, because he talks about every NHL team, not just 1 team from Ontario

Another advice: Don't attack, mock or insult your viewers in here on other social platforms. Something I start to see on regular base with YouTube tech channels.

Just hit my first 100 subs a few days ago! Thanks for the advice, lots of good information here! It's humbling realizing how much effort it takes to make videos you can put up and be proud of. Honestly amazing to see you've accomplished 12k on your "other channel" lol. Keep it up man, big fan.

Thanks Shannon. You actually inspired me to start this channel, i normally comment on my personal one. I don’t plan on it ever making money, movie channels are a dime a dozen. But it’s fun to talk about movies with friends about underrated movies.

I was hoping that in addition to this great advise you were also going to decide equipment you have used and are now using
What are the bare essentials needed to produce your shows
How far do you stand
Has lightning ever been an issue
Would you ever get your kids have a channel or are you too worried about YT haters targeting them ?

Great advice. I don't care about monetization, it will always be a hobby, but yeah, I would love to just get some more views. But regardless, I will keep posting and creating mostly 80's tribute videos from a grumpy old man.
