Be safe and responsible if you do not know what you are doing consult an electrician! I show steps on how I identified a hot/black wire and a neutral/white wire in a old light switch.

Step 1: Turn the power off to the area that you are working on.

Step 2: Test to make sure the power is off with a tester and separate the wires.

Step 3: Plug in a grounded extension cord into a known grounded outlet (which has the face look).

Step 4: Turn the Power back on.

Step 5: Set your Multi-meter to AC Volts.

Step 6: Plug in the black lead from the Multi-meter into the grounded extension hole.

Step 7: Place the Red Lead on each wire (one at a time-making sure the wires do NOT touch each other) while looking at the Multi-meter to determine which one is getting more current. Usually the one with more current/volts is the Hot Wire.

Step 8: Turn the power back off.

Step 9: Mark the wires with colored electrical tape such as black and white electrical tape etc.

Step 10: Replace outlet with compliant hardware like a light switch or standard outlet.

Step 11: Turn the power back on.

Step 12: Test and then ENJOY your new outlet.

Despite the negative comments, thank you for this video. this is the 3rd video I watched on the subject and this is the only one that did what was in the title. Thank you! Now, if I can only find a ground. I live in the Philippines and they don't use grounds. Scary, huh?

I was trying to hook up a new dishwasher but forgot to label the wires when I took the old one out and i had trouble identifying which wire was hot or neutral, your video was quite useful. Thanks

Dude that is only the Neutral phase wire... That switch closes the patch of Neutral phase, What do you think It will happen if you do a short circuit (that is what a switch does) with hot and Neutral as you were saying?

Too bad submissions that are dangerous can't be removed. That is NOT a neutral wire! That is the switched leg going to the lamp. You could 'see' neutral through the lamp's filaments. Be safe, remove the bulb and show us how that is neutral. DUH. Everyone watching, don't take any of this except as totally wrong.
