Doctor O'Donovan explains Tinea Capitis (Scalp Ringworm), including symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention.

Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) is a rash caused by a fungal infection. It usually causes itchy, scaly, bald patches on the head. Ringworm gets its name because of its circular appearance. No worm is involved.

Ringworm of the scalp is a contagious infection. It's most common in toddlers and school-age children. Tinea capitis is related to athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris) and ringworm of the body (tinea corporis).

Medication taken by mouth can kill the fungus that causes ringworm of the scalp. Medicated shampoos may help keep a person from spreading the infection to others.

Guys, keep your hair cut to under ¼" in length, use ketoconazole shampoo, take biotin to strengthen your hair, the fungus can be controlled this way, I recommend buying a hair cutting machine, trimming your own hair, in more severe cases use scabicidal/fungicidal soap for leprous dogs.

Make sure not to get bald fades because it can cause infections. It happen to me but I’m okay now. Hair isn’t 100 percent but is around 85% back.

Im using anti fungal shampoo

But my situation is different, when I do visit my barber once a week or every 2weeks to get my hair done (Bald fade .5 TOP) i dont get ring worm, but if ever I got a busy schedule and visited my barber after a month the ring worm will form, then after 3 days it will be gone, so I have to consistently visit my barber atleast every 2weeks to keep my hair short, ring worm dont form 😃, but it cause a lot of money to keep my hair short 🤣

I have had thinning / balding hair for years now, but I recently cut my own hair (possibly the very cause of the infection 😢) and within a week or two, I suddenly noticed a huge, off-center patch of hair totally missing, near/slightly behind the ear, but higher up in the scalp (but not the crown, which is thinning but in a flow, natural way, vs. this overnight total deforestation- with the exception of a little hair “stubble” visible at the site, as if the area had been shaved ~1 day ago, when in fact, this appearance is due to the damage then fungus causes the hair follicles, causing them to be brittle and snap off at the root…

I’m horrified and have no idea how I could have done this to myself/not seen this sooner, it’s almost like it popped up within ~10-15 days, vs. gradual male pattern baldness progressing very slowly and far less noticeably over many years, but this is a night and day difference, and has a diameter of 1-1.5 inches already… god help me 🤷‍♂️😞

Hi, doc! What if someone is allergic to Terbinafine? I read that if someone if allergic to one antifungal, it is likely they are allergic to other antifungals as well and also that scalp ringworm is nearly impossible to treat withiut oral medication. What would be my treatment options?

Just had son to nurse practitioner and she only suggested cortisol cream. I don’t think this is right because I thought you could only treat this with tablets. Not sure what we are supposed to do now.

I cut my hair in late February, before returning home my friend noticed white patches on the back of my head. Luckily he knew it was ringworm so I scheduled for an appointment and got prescribed a antifungal cream. I used it night and day, as my hair gradually grew back I stopped using it because I thought it was gone (I used it for 1-2 weeks).
Now in early May I cut my hair again, just to see the same white patches on the same place of my head.
Its not as big like before. But its very seeable the only difference is that it has slight redness. Is my Ringworms a serious case?
