There are different skiers thumb and gamekeepers thumb severity levels ie how bad one's skiers thumb or gamekeepers thumb can be (and each level means different amounts of pains and problems), and they are:

1) Mild
2) Moderate
3) Severe

Mild basically refers to a sprain in the thumb ulnar collateral sprain, typically with mild pain, swelling, some stiffness but overall stable joint.

Moderate severity would refer to partial thickness tearing of the skiers thumb and gamekeepers thumb ligament, with some instability. Of course there will be more pain compared to mild.

Severe here refers to total rupture of the ligament in the middle or at the insertion point, which typically will require skiers thumb or gamekeepers thumb reconstructive surgery and series of hand therapy.
