This has been called 'an irresponsible demonstration'! Oh, come on! The guy is just showing two ways of shrinking the wrap, that's all! It showed me what I was looking for. As if I'd try to join two wires that way!! :)) Thanks for the video and the time taken. ;)

If we did this for two or three wires what would the process entail?

yeah, but all that said and done and after all questions asked, can you use a hair dryer?

@DLR32963 Haha! "Heat shrink" is a special plastic that shrink on contact with heat, good for insulating soldered wires, etc...

how do you do this without a heat gun?

You could if it got hot enough...if it doesnt then try a lighter held about 3 inches from it.

If it gets hot enough it will. Im not sure if they get hot enough.

I think the point was how to use the shrink wrap, not that this was the best way to splice two wires together. I myself would use a butt clamp splice, then use the shrink wrap over that. I'm no electrician by any means but maybe he thought people would have enough sense to use something other than just the shrink wrap. Who knows??

A lighter would work or a blow dryer if it could get hot enough.

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS if you want your joint to last.

This is not a solid connection by any means. You really need a crimper or better yet, solder to get that joint tight. IF you just use shrink wrap, the connection will come apart and you'll be pulling your hair out trying to track down where you have an open circuit. This is the nightmare professionals dread the most and they will charge you a ton of money to fix it.

Do not use a lighter on the shrink wrap because you're going to burn it and let off poisonous fumes and it's more difficult to control temperature, especially if your in a tight spot.

The much better way to do this would be to use a hair drier if you have to, and it does get hot enough, but the problem is that a hair drier is too wide and will likely heat up more than the shrink wrap which can possibly damaging the wire insulator.

In short, the video is coming from an amateur and showing some really questionable techniques. It may work if you don't know any better, are in a hurry, or don't have access to the right tools for the job, but it's certainly not ideal.

I hope people gets this message and strive to do things in better ways.

EricTheCarGuy has a video on how to splice wires, and he does it right. Go see that video instead of this one.
