but how does he do that? just saying he can increase friction does not explain how it works. if he was bare handed and footed then fine, i could take that but how is he physically do that though his suit. from what you say it almost sounds like supermans aura that makes himself and his clothes so durable.... but this is spiderman so no, that doesn't work, this is a physical, biological ability.

The costume was always intended to be super thin so that the clinging power works, otherwise if he is wearing shoes he just removes them like he did in a comic page

To this day, the question still hasn't been answered. The explanation given here seems to be "Because comics said so" instead of an explanation of how one "Manipulates friction...." I guess this is where I come in..

How does one actually manipulate friction? Let's assume Spider-man is running around in just a pair of boxers and a mask, his feet have the barbed hairs just as his hands do. When he stretches out his hands and pulls down these little hairs grab onto anything they can grip ie: crack/crevice in a wall. If you need a visual example of a "Manipulation of Friction" imagine a basket ball player gripping a basket ball. His feet or should I say toes work the same way. The barbs are sticking out a certain direction to act like cleats do for baseball players when they need grip to get traction in dirt. Etc....

So how do these barbed hairs actually make surface contact if Spider-Man is wearing a suit? The glove part is easy, thin material but durable on the palm side of the gloves. Since it's mostly a spandex suit there is room for the barbed hairs to reach through and onto said crack/crevices in a wall.
Here's the kicker about the shoe/boot part... They aren't shoes or boots, but a solid onesie, a footed pajama. Spider-Man is basically running around barefoot.

Is that a better explanation? Details are in the fine-print... :D

It’s because the little hairs are kinda sharp and they stab through the spandex, spandex has tiny holes which makes him able to stick to walls so yea
