Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Korg KPR-77. Korg made some clones of classic Roland drum machines in the 80s - years before Behringer did with instruments like the TD-6. Is this vintage drum machine the evil sibling of the Roland TR-606?

Somehow the genre descriptions always make sense once the music starts playing

Amazing snare on that thing.

I actually know the guy tasked with doing the original demo of the KPR-77 (Don Muro). You can find his demo on YouTube.

I'll have to send him your (uh-hum) tribute. 😜

Early 80s electro acid jam at 4:40 is legitimately a banger. Would 110% play that in a house set as a funky breather

The Acid groove here is delightfully AFXish. Great work as always.

I really like the Korg analogue sound but never came face to face with one of these. I’ve got a MiniPops Jnr I keep meaning to add triggers to, you can definitely tell they are related, but I’m sad these aren’t cheaper.

Please don’t ever stop doing these - this really is my “weekend is here” gong. It kicks the “work” out of me and makes me want to get down to some tunes.

Welp, now I'm in love with that stupid little box. It's kind of screaming to be run through a multiband distortion box or something, isn't it? Thanks, Florian. :/

That snare sounds very suspiciously like the Volca Beats. Actually many of the sounds do. I have to believe that some of this old timer's DNA ended up in the Volca product many years later.

The Marquis de Sade and the Bhagavad Gita close to each other with Edgar Allen Poe in between. I love your bookshelves!

I LIKE how this drum machine sounds. Florian, you should make an Ep with it. I'm loving the electro vibes you're getting with your demo tracks in this video.

Sorry but I nearly spat my coffee out when you said " I can live with the clap "!!! Seriously I'm a sick puppy for even noticing that! Thanks again for a great review 😎

DUDE, at this point, i dont know how I could go on with my fridays without bad gear :D
Not only you made me dodge some bad buys, you also made me buy one bad gear (volca beats LUL), and you give me ideas, AND on top of that there is entertainment and high quality production value, for which I am grateful :D

Handkrafted editing, gear showcase jamming, acid humor (pun intended), what else can you ask for? Great video as usual AudioPilz!

The KPR-77 has my favourite handclap sound of all time. Metallic and not sounding much at all like a handclap by itself, but really works in a mix.

I love seeing the gear reviewed that i only saw in magazines ages ago and have forgotten about. I lived in a small town at the time and the best we had was a guitar shop with expensive synths and only one or two drum machines at a time.

"A questionable copy of an unsuccessful product in a time when the underlying technology was considered obsolete"

that's our korg!
