One of the best DIY videos I've ever seen. Straight and to the point. Paced moderately and without dumb music.

i have a GE gdf510-540 the wash pump seems to smoke when i start a cycle.
the washer fills like normal and the pump will start and run for about 3 sec. and shut off and start smoking. then it will just do nothing like it is waiting for the cycle to finish. i can cancel the cycle and the dishwasher empties like normal.
We think this started the other night while we were asleep as we started a cycle and it seemed to be working just fine but in the morning the dishes smelled funny and were not very clean.
the part is not cheap and i am concerned that there is an underlying reason for this problem and i dont want to just burn up another pump. any advice or help would be appreciated

I have heard the new pump motor shouldn't be operated for the first time dry. The sump should be filled with a quart of water before first time use. How do you fill the sump with water if this is a necessary step to prevent pump motor damage if operated dry?

i have a GE quietpower gsd4060n00ss dishwasher that runs thru the cycle, but will not drain. the motor and solenoid works, there are no clogs from the sump to the end of the drain. i'm stumped. the only thing i could see is that the drain valve does not completely seal against the flow of water towards the spray nozzle when the solenoid pulls the drain valve open to drain the dishwasher. there's about 2 mm of space left to the spray nozzles when the drain is opened. is this normal?
