Hunting Down Berlin's Soviet War Memorials

Living in Berlin for years, I felt ignorant about the historical side of the city so I decided to take myself and you guys on a tour to explore the mighty Soviet War Memorials that spread around all parts of the city controlled by GDR. From megalomania to modesty, these memorials are a reminder of our ever-changing history.

It's a strange sentiment to me on seeing these memorials / war graves that are monuments to both arrogance in being a 'stake of claim' of a now dead empire in the heart of the territory of its greatest enemy and also of fear of that enemy rising yet again.

It's... an antithesis of the sentiments of the western allies where Americans and British who died in WW1 / WW2 were all recovered and removed from German / 'enemy' territory and buried either in their home soil or in the soil of the countries they defended / liberated.

I don’t believe there should be any in Berlin even though the Nazi regime was the pinnacle of all evil but here is the number of rapes in the “liberation” of Germany


The majority of the assaults were committed in the Soviet occupation zone; estimates of the numbers of German women raped by Soviet soldiers have ranged up to 2 million. According to historian William Hitchcock, in many cases women were the victims of repeated rapes, some as many as 60 to 70 times.

Even though the Germans did commit so many horrendous crimes I don’t think the Soviet crimes should be overlooksed

The memorials themselves seem less to commemorate the dead than actual demonstrations of Soviet power over an enemy nation that it had completely crushed. It serves more as a reminder of that humiliating defeat at the hands of what the Nazis deemed, a "subhuman nation", as well as a defiant gesture against the Allies whom after the war, the Soviets were bound to share the spoils with. There's a potency to the propaganda that, even if you don't agree with it, comes across as awesome. Like peering into the abyss, as Nietzsche once said.

no only ultra right wing revanchist people like Erika Steinbach wanted to get the tanks removed. but they cant get the tanks removed because of the 2+4 agreements the reunification of germany is based on... germany has to keep, support and obtain all former soviet memorials.
