It breaks my heart that most people seemingly switched Zoom and other apps when the pandemic started when Skype was the OG. "Skype me" sounds cooler than "let's do a Zoom" or something like that.

Unfortunately you forgot a big reason why Skype died. Many, many gamers used Skype to game with their friends but as soon as discord came along and had the best audio quality and the voice detection feature, Skype was obsolete.

I'm 15 and actually used Skype numerous times in my younger years because my mom went on mission trips often. Just another reason Skype was great

It had great potential, but now competition is high. Zoom was able to offer a better service with a cheaper price, focusing 100% on video and customer experience.

All my close friends eventually moved away from Skype due to constant radical ugly interface changes and connection lost with calls. We all moved over to Discord, which basically has all the features Skype has but doing them better, with way more fun features. As for the family, other means like emails, SMS and FaceTime.

My girlfriend from the Philippines and me used to use Skype all the time, until half-way through 2017 when Facebook Messenger finally offered video chatting. Then we left Skype, but now Facebook Messenger is no longer reliable and the slightest thing sets it off to block us from using Facebook Messenger. We have converted back to Skype now, since it has always been reliable and 100% FREE.

I remember using Skype to talk to my friends almost everyday when I was a middle schooler

Skype didn't keep up with the competition, it became irrelevant.

Well, hundreds of millions may have joined Zoom. I tried it, didn't like it and now it's not on my new computer but Skype sure is. The big problem with Skype now is that Microsoft has gradually ruined it. Some of the features are no longer on the new Skype. I hope those two guys that originally designed Skype get together and design another communication app around the old version of Skype some day. In my eyes, that would be a big

Microsoft has injected so many bugs even in simply logging in and initialize Skype it made me just about crawl the wall by my fingernails today out of frustration when trying to help a friend, she still tries to use it. Full disclosure: I used to test operating systems at Microsoft, the ones that did not flop. Because I was on the job and gave a damn about quality. It's so bad now that it has to be intentional destruction of Skype and/or it could be as simple as the person running that group abhorring Skype consciously or otherwise.

MS destroys everything it gets its hands on. Skype is lucky it's still around. Same goes for LinkedIn.

2012: Everyone used Skype
2022: Everyone used Discord or Zoom

I do have nostalgia for Skype but locking stuff behind a paywall that were once free, having too many ads every where and also having a faulty product with no improvements
It's no wonder it died out in just a few years later

I can’t seem to get Skype to work properly on the app and on the chrome
on my laptop... sigh... haven’t had this issue with other apps. But then again could just be my laptop :/

I think it was only a matter of time before skype went down. It was just early in the market with comparatively less competition, and thats why a lot of its flaws were tolerated. When I was a kid I never experience ONE single smooth skype call, it was always laggy and just frustrating. My entire family hated it hahaha

Skype just got wierd. Whenever I didn't use Skype for a bit my account just got banned. I as a consumer won't make multiple accounts for a vedio calling app which is the same as the compitition. i however did still make a new account which got banned too. This was my personal experience
