He deserved an Oscar for this performance not to mention Peter Sellers...

RIP Peter Sellers (September 8, 1925 – July 24, 1980), aged 54
And
RIP George C. Scott (October 18, 1927 – September 22, 1999), aged 71
You both will be remembered as legends.

Here's the insane thing. George C Scott was a serious actor and was not happy with his performance in this film. Kubrick tricked him into this over-the-top performance by getting to do 'just one' take as over-the-top.

It’s one of the funniest performances of all time. Apparently, Kubrick tricked him- Scott did not like the idea of a slapstick performance, so he repeatedly asked Kubrick if he could play it straight. So Kubrick told him, absolutely he could, and proceeded to film 3 versions of Scott playing it straight and convinced Scott to do 1 version as a slapstick character, then used the slapstick version as he always knew he would.

The genius of his direction is in the way he teased that performance out. It’s a mind boggling it funny performance from Scott.

There’s no doubt that George C Scott absolutely steals this scene, but Peter Sellers’ performance is just as powerful here in my opinion. His line about not wanting to be the biggest mass murder since Hitler is delivered in such a authoritative way, its almost as if you’re getting scolded with Gen. Turgidson through the screen. Big props to these two amazing actors.

Spectacular to see this in HD. Such a huge difference to see the crispness of the black and white with all its contrast, versus having only ever seen it on muddy DVD or VHS before.

I’m with the General on this one. We cannot allow the Russian ambassador to see the big board.

FIVE…..The way George C. Scott delivered that line with his facial expressions was brilliant…

The next best line from him….”well I’d say that General Ripper has already invalidated that policy”

I’m not saying we wouldn’t get our hair mussed - 10 to 20 million killed tops. Each character is just terrific

I love how he opens the binder for reference then barely even looks at it.

Those facial expressions of Scott's add so much to the perfect timing and delivery of his lines.

Love how he collapses in his chair at the end after all his efforts go nowhere 😆

I grew up with this movie, and this is one of my favorite scenes. Kubrick, Sellers and Scott were all geniuses at their craft; how lucky we are that it all came together here.
