Linocut carving and printing: 'From The Ashes' by Maarit Hänninen #linocut #printmaking #artprocess

Last year, I moved from my small home studio to my own atelier—a creative getaway situated in the last remaining farmland in Amsterdam. The new space offers room for a bigger press, and in this video, you'll get a glimpse of both the atelier and the press.

Join me as I create my latest linocut print, "From The Ashes." Inspired by the mythical phoenix bird and the transformative times we've all experienced, this print captures the essence of growth and renewal. At 42 x 59.4 cm (16.5 x 23.4 in), it's my largest print to date.

I'll also share some exciting new techniques, including how to transfer an image using a laser printer, sticker backing paper, and Mod Podge or acrylic matte medium. Plus, I'll show you how to fix small carving mistakes using epoxy putty like Milliput.

Music: Dusty Decks - Mystique, The Riddle of the Record, Jukebox Jackpot

Oh gosh, the "Tekendoos" brings back memories. The absolute joy contained within it when I was a kid!
Lovely to see the whole process, and a magnificent result. Well done!

Could you please make a video review on the ink rollers ? After years of practice, what is your favorite brand ? Do you prefer to work with hard or soft ink rollers ? Your opinion would be very useful 🙂

Did I just read “tekendoos” on that box? Didn’t know you have a connection with the Netherlands. 😊 I really love your work. Wonderful!

Oh gosh I love seeing the whole working process so much. I'm stuck in the biggest art block ever but seeing others create is gonna pull me out of it in the near future, I can feel it & your prints are gorgeous ☺️ oh and Such a great idea to fix mistakes with a bit of epoxy putty! Genius!

Can I ask what ink or paint you use to stain the block? And do you clean it off after cutting the board (and how?) I used to use orange acrylic paint but not sure how it holds up with the transfer method & I can't really clean it of the lino afterward. Oh & I've been curious for ages: Is there a specific reason you use black for staining your block cause the print is also black? Waving at you from the Netherlands 😁

Wonderful.

What was the Milliput Putty for? A repair of a mistake? I have used epoxy putty. Very difficult, and doesn't always work. Or was there another reason?

Nice rhythm of the video and i like your artwork artwork as well :) can you tell me which kind of color you use (mixed with water?) with the brush before you transfer the digital layout on the Lino? Kind regards from Vienna :)

For me, woodblock, linocut, etching and engraving, has always completely the work of my hands and mind. Of course, now 74, I was introduced to techniques long before electronic devices came into being. Printmakers and photographers were more skilfull 45 years ago.

I tried the sticker backer paper and it worked beautifully. Have you ever reused the backing paper?
