I think a vending machine would honestly be less hassle for better profit. Banks *do* own their own branded ATMs and large service companies like MoneyPass already have deals to put their machines in the chain stores like 7 Eleven. That makes placing an independent ATM really difficult, plus even if you find a spot it's gonna be lower traffic and not every customer will trust it. I know if I'm looking for an ATM, I use my bank's locator to find trusted machine locations which almost certainly doesn't include independently owned ones

Banks definitely own most if not all of their official ATMs. It's why bank branded ATMs have free cash withdrawals. Most ATMs with fees are owned by the same few private companies. Especially here in the UK where an independent operator would be unprofitable due to the shear number of free to use machines

it really is easy to run an atm buisness. ive got 6 right now and if spend 1 hour a week filling them and writing out checks.

As someone who’s in the industry, I’ll say the hardest parts are

1. Finding a location (most are hesitant because of theft even though private ATMs rarely ever get robbed)
2. Finding a bank that will bank with you (you’ll have a better shot with small credit unions trust me)
3. Insurance (there’s only one place that insures the cash and they are super expensive)

If you can understand and get through those hurdles it’s a pretty straightforward business model from there. Servicing is minimal at maybe one time a week per machine to refill cash.

This is only good if you put it somewhere very central or touristy. Nowadays though, ATMs are defo not worth it because everything is digital nowadays
