Five dates from Period 5 that you'll want to know for your AP test.
1848 and the end of the Mexican American War which gave America new territory in California and the Southwest. College board loves asking about change, and this was a massive turning point in America’s ability to compromise over the issue of slavery.
1850- The year of Henry Clay’s last major compromise. This Compromise has its own section in the CED, so you know it’s big! You MUST remember the most controversial part of this agreement,
the stricter fugitive slave law. Northerners resented being forced to comply with the institution of slavery.
1854 and The Kansas Nebraska Act- Some thought the most democratic way to deal with slavery in the territories was popular sovereignty, which was instituted in Kansas and Nebraska. Focus on effects, like the violence known as “Bleeding Kansas” and the formation of the Republican Party.
1860 and the election of Abraham Lincoln - This was the last straw for southern states, leading many to secede before Lincoln was even inaugurated. So remember this election and Fort Sumter as short term causes of the Civil War.
1877 and the Compromise of 1877- The controversial agreement made Republican Rutherford B. Hayes President in exchange for the removal of federal troops from the South. This ended Reconstruction, but failed to fix race relations in the South. Reconstruction appears ALL OVER the free response questions and has been the topic of several Short answer Questions, so knowing this compromise will definitely help you come exam day.
