Mochi is expensive because its mostly made by the traditional methods which includes pounding it carefully as you could hurt yourself so its pretty expensive and delicious

I think she’s talking about like grocery store mochi, not fresh mochi from Japan.
Everyone has a point though. Some Mochi can be expensive because of the technique and the fact that it’s handmade, has fresh fruits, or other things. And those things make the high prices understandable, butttt if you’re paying big money for non authentic grocery store mochi that has no business being so damn expensive then that’s not great. Making it yourself at home can definitely save you money.

I’d also like to say, I’ve eaten a lot of authentic mochi when I traveled to Japan and honestly the taste is like nothing I’ve tried here in my home country. The best part is that I ate a lot without breaking the bank. There was a lot of affordable and delicious mochi! I would bring some home but sadly I can’t buy mochi in bulk and bring it home because mochi expires quickly. I could only enjoy the mochi while I was there.
So what I’m trying to say is, from my experience eating a lot of mochi in my life, the higher the price doesn’t automatically = better mochi. Fresh mochi made the traditional way, in my experience, always tastes good whether it’s cheap or expensive.
Ofc this isn’t to say non traditional, non authentic mochi won’t taste good because that is just not true. There are also lots of good non traditionally made mochi.
But- if like me, you don’t live in a country that makes mochi, good mochi is probably hard to find, and is most likely expensive no matter the quality or taste. So making your own mochi is a pretty good alternative. Especially if like where I’m from, when mochi became popular, companies started selling shitty mochi for outrageous prices and marketed them as imported even though it’s not.
Also for the people who are having a hard time finding good mochi and really want to try some, I recommend going to a Japanese or Korean grocery store. That’s where I found good mochi ice cream👍🏻

The only reason why its expensive is because the efforts of making them due to protected japan heritage and culture. it is also to make sure that the mochi itself is very good and i mean very very good.. in term of texture, softness and well balanced flavor of the mochi itself 😊

Super easy? Super easy!? Girl I will call it super easy if it’s sitting on my kitchen table pre-made so I can bring it back to my room to eat it and watch dance moms while wrapped in a blanket

It's because they usually pound special mochi rice and don't use the powder right now she just made daifuku which is different and usually uses powder

I made apple pie ala mode mochi my first time making it, the full realized product two days and even tho the mochi dough was over cooked it needed to be a little sweeter the light apple flavor was really nice. The whole process was actually was easier than I expected.

Real mochi is super good and also takes time and effort, don't just say things that you don't know on the internet

I agree. Most “mochi”sold on stores are daifuku anyway and one of easiest to make.

You ain't seen the traditional mochi where you got two dudes literally beating the mixture with wooden sledgehammers?

That's why it's so expensive- this is just an imitation that skips a few steps!
But as long as you enjoy it that's all that matters! 🙂

It’s similar and has all the same style as Mochi. Definitely a good alternative!

Only bad thing is how hard it is to clean the bowl used to microwave the mix….
