Hydrogen for power generation is not a fuel. It's a battery. You need a fuel or energy source to create hydrogen so that it can store the energy. It's an inefficient process and why it will never succeed. Batteries may not have enough energy density for large earth movers, ships and jets today, but they are getting more dense and lighter every year. By 2050, what kind of batteries will we have? It's likely, they will be better than any form of hydrogen storage.

One big issue with Hydrogen is that the molecule is so small that it is very hard to store or transport it as it leaks through almost any other material. Look at the issues SLS has had. It is also Highly explosive.

Let’s see if this makes sense
First you use Electricity to create “Green Hydrogen”
Second you use electricity to compress it into a small volume

Now both of these processes are inefficient

Then you are going to generate electricity from the hydrogen, which is also an inefficient process

Ddoesit real, y sound like a good idea to WASTE all that electricity?

Not to this engineer

Converting green hydrogen to green ammonia or green methane/methanol is going to be huge. Monash university developed a new electrolyzer catalyst that yields ammonia directly

Where are they getting the hydrogen from to pump into the salt domes? Are they cracking it from water by using electrolysis? If so where do they get the water from in Utah and what energy source do they use?

Let's look at some number; To create 1kg of green hydrogen by electrolysis requires 60 kWh of electricity and 20 litres of water. This 1Kg of hydrogen (11 cubic metres at room pressure) has a energy content of 34 kWh. Then the compression, storage and distribution on top will ensure that only limited applications will be commercially viable.

The best bit for shipping you didn't mention is you just need some offshore wind consistently producing green hydrolysis of sea water and the ships can refuel out at sea for free and continue on. You'd have to convert over old existing rigs to store it for the ships or put in new infrastructure, but it's definitely doable. Can make use of the old pipelines to move it on shore if you wanted to as well.

One thing not mentioned is that water vapor (the byproduct of burning hydrogen or using it in a fuel cell) is also a greenhouse gas that cause’s climate change. Large scale use may just replace one greenhouse gas with another thus with a zero sum reduction.

I’ve heard this topic discussed many times, but you guys make it very clear with straightforward words and intuitive graphics. Thank you.

Hydrogen and nuclear power.... We harrd heading in the right direction.... Also, those Wind Turbines are designed to break down...lol....

Interesting video! More videos about green hydrogen please!

YES MORE CONTENT LIKE THIS. I had no idea there was a solution for airplanes and ships. Excelllent content.

It looks like a good option for larger vehicles likes ships and heavy industry - until we can get technology like fusion reactors working.

I strongly disagree. First, the reason hydrogen is first on the periodic table has nothing to do with how plentiful it is. That is silly. It's position on the periodic table stems from one fact: It is the smallest atom. Hence it is atom one. Second, the premise of this video is terminally flawed because hydrogen is nearly impossible to store due to it being the smallest atom. It leaks from virtually every storage container that has ever been invented to contain it. The best storage containers for hydrogen do not stop it leaking -- they only slow how fast it leaks. The space shuttle experience made this painfully evident. Rather than supporting the idea of hydrogen-fueled rockets, the space shuttle showed what a poor solution it actually was. It was a very poor choice for the SLS that was imposed for bad reasons -- politicians wanting votes in their home districts for out-dated jobs regarding legacy rocket hardware. Third, we already have a workable solution to the near-term energy crisis: nuclear. France gets this and is moving to quickly restart its nuclear power industry. Plus, there have been many advances in nuclear power which the public is largely unaware of and the media seems strangely willing to ignore.

I am normal person just. Think hidrogen only have one eletron to its orbit @ same time oxigen have many eletrons . The energy its concentrated on the opposite side and heat is the energy source for movement if its cold there it no eletrons movement and same thing applies .they say u loose energy through heat loss . The more oxigen its inject into engine the more power make . If u put lots hydrocarbon fuel will flood the engine and you don't go. But if u put carbon and igniter and add pure oxigen the fuel get really hot 🔥 cause oxigen so the fuel its the oxigen and carbon its the Midian condition to the energy be transferred. The hidrogen its cooling the heat of the thermoreaction and that's why water is resolt of the reaction cause u not use water using the energy in the molecules off . And the energy its the eletrons in movement because ever action its equal reaction if eletrons its push they move but if they are stable then it's no energy create And energy don't dessipear / Dessiped from hot to cold and if heat again comes back in the for of energy

There’s a reason why God has created this planet with so much hydrogen everywhere!

Mini nuclear fusion reactors or micro nuclear fusion reactors may be the most common used energy in 2050. !
Who knows. ??? Why not. ???

Is hydrogen really green you going to put food coloring in that also
