A display of the Irish Jig, a Scottish national dance, from the 2021 Grampian Games, held in Braemar, Scotland. With almost all Highland Games in Scotland cancelled again in 2021, the Grampian Highland Games Association and Royal Scottish Highland Games Association came together for one special celebration of Highland Games, held at the home of the Braemar Gathering on 14th August 2021.

The Irish Jig is one of the Scottish National Dances for competitions. The Scottish version is a parody of an Irish washerwoman in an agitated frame of mind, an energetic dance featuring lots of fist shaking and skirt flouncing among female competitors. It is a parody of Irish dancing and the infamous Irish temper. Males dancing the Jig act out the happy-go-lucky Irishman facing his wife’s tirade. It is one of the two Scottish National dances that has its own costume rather than the standard Highland or National outfits.

This is beautiful as it is hilarious —had to rewatch after learning they are portraying an angry Irish washerwoman —where rivalry becomes a fun tradition. Makes me smile

The traditional Scottish "Irish Jig" stems from Scotts making fun of the Irish 😅 The dance is supposed to be a mockery of an angry Irish washwoman who is raging mad at her drunken husband.

What a surprise coming across this video. I spent a few years in Braemar, my brother was married at the church there and I made the biggest mistake of my life there! - ah well time moves on. Such a lovely wee place it was. Fond memories of the place and the girl I left behind.

That must be so hard on the joints and legs period….having to dance so hard each step instead of lightly!

That's Laura Smith (green) and Molly Smith (red), no relation I think! They're both from the Brendan Gordon School of Dance.

Irish or Scottish? Pick one! Can't be both.
