Ukraine was inhabited by various tribes and cultures beginning from early Gravettian humans to Scythians and early Slavs . In the 9th century, these East Slavic tribes established the Kievan Rus' state, with Kiev as its capital. At the end of 10th century, Volodemyr 1 converted to Orthodox Christianity and The Christianization completed fastly with the help of the strong ally Byzantine Empire.
Prosperous times ended In 1240, when the Mongols (Golden Horde) invaded Kievan Rus' and sacked capital. About a century later, part of Ukraine is conquered from mongols by Poland and Lithuania. in 1441, Crimean Khante succeeded the empire of the Golden Horde. But soon after that, Crimean Khante became a protectorate of the Ottoman Empire.
The 17th century saw the rise of the Cossacks, a group of warrior-peasants who played a significant role in Ukrainian history. Led by Hetmans, such as Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Cossacks rebelled against Polish-Lithuanian rule and established the semi-independent Cossack Hetmanate.
Ukraine became a battleground in the 18th century as neighboring powers, including Poland, Russia, and Austria, partitioned the country. The majority of Ukrainian territories fell under Russian control, leading to a period of Russification and suppression of Ukrainian identity.
Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Ukraine experienced a brief period of independence from 1918 to 1921, which was subsequently crushed by the Soviet Red Army.
During World War II, Ukraine was heavily affected, experiencing widespread destruction and loss of life.
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine declared independence and became a sovereign nation. However in 2022, Russian army invaded Ukrainian lands again.
