Gray Jedi AREN'T real according to LUKE SKYWALKER and GEORGE LUCAS

What is a Gray Jedi and are they real? Some say it is a Force User who can use both the Light and Dark Side without being corrupted or a Rogue/Maverick Jedi who defies the High Councils wishes. The Je’daii Order is often cited as an example since they would use both Light and Dark but even they knew that using the Dark Side would throw Tython, a planet imbued with the force, out of balance. They would eventually stop using the Dark Side due to these imbalances and would create the Jedi Order.

Fans often say the Imperial Knights, trained Jedi who served the Imperial Remnant, were Gray Jedi. However, it was in their code that if the Emperor ever fell to the Dark Side, they would need to remove him from power. In Legends, Luke Skywalker would tell his Son Ben the following. “For a Jedi there is no place for a rainbow Force. There is no room for compromise. We walk the path of the light side, or we fall into darkness. There is no gray area, Ben”.

George Lucas would elaborate on the Dark Side. “What happens when you go to the Darkside, it (the Force) goes out of balance. The Dark side is more powerful. If you want ultimate power you really have to go to the stronger side which is the Dark Side, but ultimately it would be your undoing.” Personally, I think it throws out the themes of the good and evil told in Star Wars but tell us what you think in the comments.

Grey Jedi come from gamers who want the good guy ending, but also to use Force lightning.

the idea of 'gray' comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of balance and misunderstanding of light and dark

Can people stop saying Qui Gon was a rogue Jedi, he was more like a true Jedi than the Jedi council because he was in touch with the force and enacted the will of the force, even at detriment to his position in the Jedi order

I always thought of a gray jedi as someone who isn't part of the jedi order, but also isn't a sith and isn't part of the dark side. Kind of like Ahsoka, Zayne Carrick, or even Cade Skywalker.

So a theory some people seem to be flinging around is that gray jedi use the light side but are also capable of using the dark side when needed.
A line from The Lord of the Rings comes to mind, when Frodo offers Gandalf the Ring Gandalf's response is, "Understand me Frodo, I'd use this Ring from a desire to do good. But through me it would wield a power to great and terrible to imagine."
I know LOTR is an entirely different setting but in both cases there is still evil and no matter what evil destroys. Evil cannot destroy evil as it would only breed more evil. It will tempt you into thinking you can and so thus you must find humility to resist temptation or suffer the folly of pride.

The biggest problem with gray jedi is they're often nothing more than barely disguised fan fiction of creating some ultimate jedi that breaks all the universe rules.

The problem with the whole Grey Jedi idea is that the Force isn't a set of video game abilities and the Dark Side isn't a literal separate skill tree or whatever. It's a matter of philosophical approach.

The Jedi and the Sith both operate on philosophies meant to maximize attunement with the Force, yet are mutually exclusive: Being extremely zen and in harmony with the universe makes you a powerful Force user. Being hyper-focused on yourself and your strongest, most intense passions _also_ makes you a powerful Force user. But you can't really do both of those at the same time. If you try to balance two opposite extremes, they take each other out.

A "Grey Jedi" would thus be very mediocre - essentially just a normal person who happens to be Force sensitive. Rather than having the best qualities of both sides (which I believe is what people who like this concept tends to image) their connection to the Force would be unfocused.

In the end most grey jedi still end up siding with the order so I must agree with luke and george here. In the end they are all really just rogue jedi who didnt fall to the dark side (yet).

I feel like a Gray Jedi is a Force-User that CAN use both sides without giving up their moral compass and not being consumed. I personally view the Dark Side as a metaphor for addiction, like steroids or maybe even something as simple as a pain killer, it’s okay to use these medications when you need them, but using them all the time will cause you to fall into addiction. I think a Gray Jedi would be someone who is not afraid to USE the Dark Side when they need to without losing themselves to it.

The way I see it, The force is a conduit that carries emotion and intent, and the life using it affects reality on a grand scale. Force sensitives can simply use that energy and bend it to their will. Or serve as a catalyst for the will communicated by the gestalt of life through the force.

The difference between the light and dark side isn't good an evil. It's the emotion of the life of the galaxy. The itch to kill. The pity and compassion. The need to love. The envy.

The danger of the "dark side" is when you use yourself as a conduit for the darker emotions of the galaxy, it affects you. How could it not? You think your thoughts are your own, but in reality they are twisted by the thoughts and emotions conveyed through the force by the total mass of billions. How else could Jedi fall so easy if the dark feelings they feel didn't create an echo chamber that made their personality more volatile to change than the average being.

And that's probably what they meant by "balance."

With the 1st trilogy to the prequels being principle Lucas made Star Wars content, the story makes it clear that the dark side poison's the Force like an infection or sickness. You aren't better by staying constantly sick or staying a little corrupted. The Jedi weren't the paragons they were made out to be, the Sith were unabashedly evil
