Grant supporting tuition, books, stipend and more for Native Americans earning a degree towards an initial license.

"There are opportunities out there to help young American Indian students that want to become educators."

"Teaching is a great profession. It's something you need to look at. The salary is increasing. It's a great opportunity. No matter where you live in the United States, you can find a job teaching.

It's about having the ability to teach anywhere, teach any kind of kid.

The grant funds a director, a half-time administrative assistant, and also funds up to twelve full-time students to get funding for tuition, books, fees, stipend, child care. So I can recruit twelve new students every year."

"The FATE program helped me with books, with tuition, When I did my student internship as a student teacher, at Lumberton High School, it actually helped pay my bills at home."

"There's three kinds of people we can fund: a traditional undergrad student who's working on a undergrad teaching license, or a person that has a degree in something, like sociology, history, math, and they want to come back to be a teacher, we call those "lateral entries", or we have an M.A.T., they're working on a masters of arts in teaching, and that masters of arts in teaching leads towards an initial license. So we have those three categories of students in our program. "

"Beginning teacher support increases retention rates of teachers."

"We want them to be the best teachers they can be and have high skill sets, and be very marketable when they graduate."

"FATE is preparing you for what teaching is really about. Because I've seen people be a great student in the school of education, but not be an effective teacher. FATE prepares you to be an effective teacher."

"All the students in our program have access to all the resources UNCP has, the writing center, the career center-- We have math tutors. We have Praxis tutors for students who are struggling with passing the Praxis exam. We hire external individuals to come in and do workshops on the weekends or at night."

"I have actually worked in schools before, and I've been to professional development meetings that were not as productive as what we have with FATE."
