I think the biggest reason for Indian branding is recognizability. Some people might not know where Nepal is or might think they don't what Nepalese cuisine consists of and think that restaurant's not for them. But they probably know Indian, so they're more likely to try it

Most of the Indian restaurants here in Colorado Springs are owned and operated by Nepalese families. Also, most of the Chinese restaurants here are owned and operated by Thai families with Mexican cooks, and Japanese restaurants, save one, are owned an operated by Korean families. But, when it comes to curry at home, it's the same Golden Curry that my Okasan has used since my childhood.

Hey, I’m actually from Kobe originally, and there’s a vary small Nepalese restaurant close from Suma station of JR line. They’re one of few restaurants I’ve seen that actually brand themselves as Nepalese, and their Himalayan curry soup is the bomb. Check em out next time you’re in the area!

Actually yes, Japanese cuisine is really mild with their subtle umami way. I think there are regions where light ramen > heavy ramen, which isn't bad of of course. But being raised in an environment that's full of spices and strong flavors, Japanese cuisine isn't really everyone's cup of tea in my region.

I’m going to the UK next week, and I heard they have good Indian food too. I’m so excited!

I am lucky enough to live in a part of the US that has amazing Indian and Nepalese food. There’s also restaurants by region, by religion, and even farm to table Indian restaurants with farm stores. I have both Indian and Nepalese friends, and they’ve assured me that what I’m eating is what they’d eat in their home country. It’s actually a bit of an issue because I can’t eat spicy food right now because of a medical issue, so I have to ask for full spices in the masalas, just not the full chili quantities. Jain food has been good because a lot of their dishes are not crazy spicy, just gentle spice blends that do not contain garlic or onions. Now I want Indian food!

Same set would be at least $15-$20 in the US with weak seasoning.

Salaryman passed out in a bush in Shinjuku.

Nepalis are our friends. In our part of India we say that we have a "roti and beti ka rishta" basically meaning we eat the same food and marriages take place between the two communities. Also helps that it's one of the only two Hindu majority nations in the world. Even my dad says I have some Nepali blood in me though it goes back many generations ago😂

I've been to one Indian (or Nepalese-Indian place) in Japan. It's called Himalaya, it's in Kofu, Yamanashi, and is a short walk from the university a friend of mine is a professor at. Well-priced, plenty of options, you can get really spicy there (I'm only a medium-heat sort of person, and their medium was good). The big thing for me though was their butter naan, it was melt-in-the-mouth. Much like my favourite Indian restaurant here in Brisbane, Australia, the butter naan is almost like a croissant.

I went to Japan and had Italian food that specialised in food from a specific region of Italy. Really good stuff.

It's similar in the states. Essentially every Seattle area Japanese/Sushi/Teriyaki restaurant is run by Korean families. All about branding.
