We're on the same on stuff that matters why would anyone shoot 10 bit over 12 bit. great job

Log looks more digital, I can't explain it but it does, compression?

In the R5C I always shoot in RAW-LT. Now I also got the R5MKII but because I have a normal job, I don't know when I will find the time to make the comparison.

Nice, for me the best new options for the R5ii are the option to shoot 1080 Fine and 2K and 2K fine. If you shoot full weddings with a lot of footage you don't want to fill the harddrive too fast. . I'm really curious how the Fine modus differ :)

Some DP's on You Tube say the R5 II is to detailed and not cinematic.

I do shoot raw because apparently I love torturing myself. My workflow might make one cry.

I shoot with the R5. 8k raw and I have two workflows.

1. Use the Canon Raw tools to convert to 4k prores444 which is also 12bit and I keep it as log. This allows me to have a very fast format to use in either Resolve or FCP. A bit slow but the Canon raw app batch converts and on a Mac has some very nice format options.

2. In Resolve I also convert the 8k raw to 4k but I also use a combination of nodes to convert to linear data, apply Netvideo at high quality settings and a custom noise profile, then convert from linear back to log or my color space I’m working in if I’m staying in Resolve. This is my batch conversion workflow if I need noise reduction. This is as slow as watching a WI snowbank melt. I let it run overnight and can typically get through 20 minutes of material a night. Slow but it looks exceptional.

As an alternative to raw I sometimes shoot over by 2 stops. This helps the noise a ton. 2 is my sweet spot to still keep some highlight detail. 3 stops over if it’s a VFX type situation. Why 3 in that situation? Because we rarely have bright light sources in a green screen shoot. We also want as pure of images as possible. Noise reduction messes with edges and can create a chattering pulsing along edges. Shooting 3 stops over even with raw gives insanely clean details. This is my VFX workflow of choice just like on the BMD Pocket cameras ISO 100 is best for green screen shoots.

I love creating HDR because again apparently love to torture myself. I’m still torn if I prefer base exposure with noise reduction or shooting 2 stops over. The nit brightness isn’t as good when shooting 2 stops over. I’m one of those HDR should be about brightness people at odds with Hollywood colorists that insist on grading everything to fit under 1 nit.

Against my better judgement and glutton for punishment I also process as c-log2 from the 8k raw.

Yes I think NeatVideo is better than the Resolve noise reduction. NeatVideo adjusts the amount per brightness region of the frame. Resolve is a one size adjust across the entire frame. The way the noise floor works on the R5 the lowest couple of stops are horrendous. They suddenly get really good neat middle gray and rock solid above mid gray. Since the noise is so high at the bottom Resolve needs to use strong settings to get rid of it. At that point all the fine detail is stripped out of the brighter parts of the frame. NeatVideo adapts much better and practically doesn’t touch the brighter sections at all which maintains perfect detail where it counts. It’s slow for a reason. It also has much better tools to build a noise profile vs Resolve which is more of a randomly move sliders until it looks ok to the eye.

I don't think it is oversampled 4K-RAW 60, because I know that 8K-RAW 60 from the R5C is also sharper than 8K H265 in the R5C, so row is sharper than non row, even when I don'tknow why. That and the 12 bit are the reasons why I only like shooting in 8K-RAW up to 60fps, and only for 120fps I have to shoot in 10bit...

How much better is the dynamic range of the R5II clog2 vs the R5 clog3? I shoot real estate and want to know if it's worth pulling the trigger.

OMG you got an R5 Mk2 ... please don't violently shake it around like you did the R6 Mk2.

60 looks weak for a 5000$ camera, rather it looks like Osmo pocket 3. This is another proof of this weak performance in YT and other sites :( I was going to buf this camera, now Im not so sure. Thanks for examples!

Jared, I love your content, but you're over exposing both 4K RAW and CLOG2 big time by about 2/3 of a stop and you're making the R5ii look so bad. You're face is just a blanket of pure clipped highlights and the grass is lacking texture and detail. Turn down the knob my brother.

Be careful with moiré if you shoot 4k raw in architecture…
