1965....#4 U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 UK Singles Chart, #10 Canada
Original live performance video edited and remastered with HQ studio sound.
"King of the Road" is a song written by country singer Roger Miller, who first recorded it in November 1964. The lyrics tell of the day-to-day life of a hobo who, despite being poor (a "man of means by no means"), revels in his freedom, describing himself humorously and cynically as the "king of the road". It was Miller's fifth single for Smash Records.
The popular crossover record hit No. 1 on the US Country chart, No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 1 on the Easy Listening surveys. It was also No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart, and in Norway. Miller recalled that the song was inspired when he was driving and saw a sign on the side of a barn that read, "Trailers for sale or rent". This would become the opening line of the song.

This song is a PERFECT report the old magic ( even PSYCHIC ) Route 66 culture!!! Long dead now, sadly. That was the TRUE wild American Spirit!!! All obsoleted out of existence by corporate power and gentrification!!! I can’t believe Route 66 is now abandoned!!! I guess when the Covid 19 shut-down occurred, the “Old Mother Road” just couldn’t take the financial “beating.” The old motel strips were that piece of Route 66 that once existed in EVERY town. Most of those are also long gone and replaced be freeways and interstates.

Love this song, brings me way back to the 60s, when I was just a kid, my father had joined the Silent service Wright out of high school in 1958 instead of hiding in college as the cold war was getting red hot, a year later I was born, my Mom and DAD were high school sweethearts, so we traveled around back in the 60s quite a bit, so the radio was always going, as my mother and us 3 Kids by 1962 would move from state to state to where ever my father was stationed, this song has a very special place in my heart, and still sounds great today, Thanks for for sharing this song, so many roads we traveled and so many great songs, but like I said this one is my favorite from that time and still sounds great, Thanks again, Leo 👍✌❤
