Mourning Gecko, The Best Pet Lizard?

Показать описание
Mourning geckos (Lepidodactylus lugubris) are some of the most interesting geckos in the world. Parthenogenetic geckos, these guys, or rather gals, are all female and reproduce asexually. It's crazy! They are also tiny and easy to keep. The only real question is, are mourning geckos the best pet lizard for you?

“You’ve got to find a mate, and that can be really hard” you don’t need to tell me that Clint ;-;

When my dad was stationed in Hawaii and I was 12 I used to catch mourning geckos all the time. In Hawaii they are practically under every loose piece of tree bark. At one point I had this giant 30 gallon glass aquarium I got from a garage sale for five bucks and I tricked it out. I had this 10 inch tall tiny waterfall style fountain I put in for a substitute water bowl. In the bottom I put dirt and wood chips from the garden as substrate and I used fresh fern leaves and pieces of palm fronds picked from the garden and pieces of fallen tree bark and sticks as hides. I fed them by catching tiny insects and putting small pieces of papaya, mangoes and other fresh fruits in a little bowl. At one point I think I had more than fifty of them in a thriving little colony and then my mom realized how many I had and made me release most of them back out into the garden and from then on I wasn't allowed to keep more than twenty.

I love this man's personality. He's like a tiny gecko himself.

All geckos are just adorable in my opinion

I love the analogies you use for describing lizards:
Mourning geckos - insects
Blue tongue skinks - potatoes
Green iguanas - ninjas

Adorable, personable, curious, non aggressive, and they just keep cloning more of these wonderful little friends! What’s not to love? I fell head over heels for these little ones!!

I accidentally left a small gap one night in the main mourning gecko tank and I thought for sure if anyone got out they were gone. Two days later the one that did get out was sitting on the mesh top waiting to get back in for breakfast. We were so lucky. She's a saucy thing.

That one dislike must be a mourning gecko that got smooshed in handling.

"It can be really hard to find a male and its dangerous right?"
I've never felt more identified with a gecko in my entire life

I actually love these. I think these are finally the geckos for me. I'm off now researching these but thanks for introducing them to me!!!!

You could use one of those massive Costco/Sams Club cheese ball containers for adults.
Bonus: They are big enough that your army of geckos could be massive!!!

They're independent geckos who need no man

I have a colony of these beautiful little Geckos. They are amazing to have. I started with 3 but my colony has grown to the point where I'm not 100% how many I have at any given time lol. They are super fast. Had an adult escape and found her 3 months later and reintroduced her to her colony. Have also found babies in my Crested Gecko tank when they have escaped also. These ladies are true escape artists and will sit on the back of food bowls and escape through gaps in doors when you open them. They also make adorable little chirps when there are a lot of them. I keep lots of different geckos (Lechie, Giant Day, Crestie, Gargoyle, Leo and Mourning) and they are all so awesome and different its amazing.

I started with 3 babies a year ago and now i have 6 of them with some eggs still waiting to hatch. They make cute squeeky sounds too, specially around evening and morning times. Highly recommend having some in your collection :)

Parthenogenesis. I know what it is and that some geckos do it, but I’ve never really learned about all the details in biology class. It blows my mind that creatures can reproduce this way!

*"You could cook them"*

My first thought: "wait, why would you eat them??"

Clint: "that's why I don't recommend a heat source"

*Ooooof* :')

I have been keeping (and, inevitably, producing ) these little geckos for years. Really fun for planted bioactive vivaria! I have two vivaria for adults and a smaller growout vivarium.
