I used to drink pretty heavily, but since going keto and IF, I tend to only have a "cheat night" each week where I drink roughly 2-3 drinks. That used to be nothing, but now I get headaches in the middle of the night and feel like shit the next morning. It's interesting that my cravings for alcohol are lower, and that drinking just a little gives me a hangover. It's probably the best diet for kicking alcoholism.

For me, drinking is a gateway drug to Ben & Jerry’s.

Wife - "Why do you always buy the most expensive bourbon"
Me - 'The more it's aged the "better" it is for my health. Checkmate'

Regularly drinking alcohol jacked my blood pressure up to 165 over 100. I quit for two months and my blood pressure went down to 110 over 70. Everyone talks about your liver on alcohol but never your blood pressure.

Drinking alcohol stops me from losing weight.

One thing that I never see brought up is that your brain can feed off alcohol, as it can pass thru the barrier. I lost an uncle due to his alcoholism. His brain was accustomed to feeding off alcohol. He had an accident and was hospitalized. The hospital did not know he was an alcoholic and did not give him the proper nutrition for his alcoholic brain. He went into a coma and died due to this. It is very important that people understand that if you drink too much alcohol, your brain can get accustomed to alcohol, and you cannot always quit cold turkey. Lack of alcohol can literally kill you, if your brain is using it for food.

Super helpful!! Thank you! I wish you had covered the hard seltzer, too. So popular now for their low carb content, but most are made with malt liquor, and I don't know much about how they impact the body.

Hey Thomas how about seltzers? Are those a good option?

In Norway and Sweden I know that the amount of sugar in wine is given on the label in the store, so it makes it a lot easier to pick wines with low sugar contents.

Anything distilled is clear. I know because I make my own vodka, brandy and whiskey. The coloring typically comes from being in charred barrels. I do not get a hangover when I drink, but I also drink water. Much of the hangover is caused by dehydration, unless the distiller did not do the job right and some nasty chemicals got in like butane.

Thomas: what I do with red wine is I take my keto blood glucose meter strip and dip it into the wine for a second and then it measures how much residual sugar is in the wine. So if you are getting 100 on the meter it means the wine has 1% residual sugar which is a dry red wine. Some red wines, even really expensive ones, have as much as 5%. Even some fruity wines actually are quite dry and don’t have a lot of sugar in them. So the best thing to do with wine is just use that blood glucose meter and test it and then you’ll know if it’s gonna affect you or not. I’ve done this and I’ve noticed that as long as It’s under a percent and a half it doesn’t affect my keytones that is as long as you’re only having a glass. On another note even if the alcohol is higher like 14 1/2% it doesn’t mean that there’s less sugar even though you might think so: the reason is it depends on when they harvested the grapes and so some winemakers will push the bricks up above 25 and then hope that there’s more residual sugar left. But as a general rule you know that has some logic in it but I think the different winemakers or styling wines differently and doing things that that’s not the best way to test how much sugar is left in the wine..

Useful, thanks - would have been good to hear about the mixers. Gin, vodka ok but what about the mixers that go with those like tonic water etc?

I did order the Mojo Ketone Tester promo kit. according to a couple top tester list it was #1 and the least expensive when you look at test strip cost. I have always been happy with your choice of sponsors.

When I have a good bourbon it’s always neat or one ice cube. The clear spirits are almost always mixed which brings a host of other components into the picture.
