2022 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp REVIEW | Fun ✅ Fast ✅ Not perfect ❌

The Stumpjumper is one of Specialized’s best known mountain bike families, with the name going back decades, to the early years of the brand.

In fact, the Stumpy name has been around almost as long as the ‘mountain bike’ but how does this latest version fare?

In this video, Senior Technical Editor, Tom Marvin, finds out if it’s moving with the times or if it’s stuck in the past.

The Stumpjumper Comp was reviewed as part of our Bike of the Year test and is the cheapest version in the range.

A big thanks to our sponsors for helping us make this year's Bike of The Year a reality: MET Helmets, Bluegrass protection and of course, BikePark Wales. The video contains product placement from our sponsors but rest assured our reviews will always remain impartial, backed up by our expert test team.

What do you think of the Specialized Stumpjumper? Should it be left in the past or has Spesh got this bike bang on trend for 2022? Let us know in the comments!

It’s may not be the best but I think it’s the best all rounder. It’s the Golf GTI of Mountain Bikes.

I just ordered the S4 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Carbon White/Black for 3300 Euro total including MWST (VAT) here in Switzerland. It will take a couple of weeks to arrive but thats ok for me.

I think this is a sweat deal for that frame and components :)
Cheers

Regular stumpy in carbon doesn’t have a 4 bar system. Flex stays

If your Fox34 is feeling a little non compliant it may be assembled wrong. My friends had an excess of grease that was covering some of the dampening ports. Its working much better now.

The Stumpy does not have a four bar Horst link suspension. The Stumpy has a single pivot flex stay suspension. Hard to trust this review of the Stumpy when the reviewer doesn't even know what type of suspension the Stumpy has. Do better!

I have the carbon evo expert, I'm 53, kinda slow, but I love it. Thanks for the video

The frame is the SAME as the SWorks frame - only difference is the shock link is Carbon on the SWorks frame

I scrapped the Purgatory and went with a Maxxis DHR EXO on the rear and it totally changed the handling of the bike. The Butcher Grid T9 is a great front tire.

I absolutely love this bike. I do agree that the grip2 damper is hard on your hands, the tires being a little hard on their compounds, and climbing w/out the level in trail mode at least can lead for a bad time. If someone were to upgrade anything first on it I would say the wheelset. They're heavy with poor engagement on the rear hub (3 pawl for mine). Overall though I do agree this is a great bike and will be more bike than what most people use depending on your area.

My husband rides a Stumpjumper and loves it.

I would express such an idea. Every bike is different and what doesn't work for one may work for another. in this respect the test winner trek top fuel will not be better for me, since the jumper is more capable, has a little more travel and a slack head angle, its more flexible pliable chassis is more pleasant. For me lstumpjumper is the best.

How does it compare to Trek Top Fuel 9.7?

Pretty sure they all use the same carbon now…s works gets an extra carbon link but no longer 2 different carbon layups for frames…seems pretty glaring error along with wrong suspension platform.

5:21 why would anyone care about BB height in relation to axles?

I don't own any specialized. Any comparison of bikes should eliminate variables aka PLEASE USE CONTROL TIRES AT EQUAL PRESSURES! Also get over the popular quips about flexible frame, since when is this bad?

Anyone have thoughts on upgrading fork and shock? Longer travel 150mm
