What is a trail bike? Or rather, what should a trail bike be?

Specialized’s stumpjumper was born in 1981 and is regarded as the first production mountain bike. The Stumpjumper platform has since kept the essence of mountain biking at its core.

We have a look at the Stumpjumper in detail and see how it sizes up to the South African terrain and our riding scene!

Nice review. The SJ is the sweet spot between the more gravity focused SJ Evo and the XC focused Epic. You did forget a model though...there is the Pro range SJ, just above the Expert that you have there and just below the "all bells and whistles" S-Works. However, I do think that the Expert model offers the best bang/value for the buck.

I ride the Stumpjumper Carbon Comp model in Switzerland with some upgrades.
Amazing Bike and you can get this for 3000 Euros 🙃

I also replaced the tyres with a fast trak T5 back and a ground control T7 front since the T9 Butcher is amazing but super slow rolling.
Cheers

Having come from a Cannondale Prophet I find the carbon SJ heavy, quite a bit, much slower on the climbs.

The alloy version is almost comically heavy, not fun to climb
