Today we are going to be showing you how to install Openmediavault 5 on Raspberry Pi 4. This is episode 5 of our Raspberry Pi Series. If you haven’t followed our other episodes please do this first to catch up with where we are today (Optional).

Note: You need to have the Raspberry Pi OS Lite (Legacy) version installed which is based on Raspberry Pi OS Buster. This is because OMV5 is not supported in the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye only the latest OMV 6 is compatible with it. To date (Updated 24th December 2021) it is recommended to use OMV 5 as it is the only stable version.

This is very important! as the OMV script, we use in episode 5 will install Openmediavault 6 (OMV 6) on the latest Raspberry Pi Os version based on Debian Bullseye.

However, if you like to live your life on the bleeding edge, by all means, install the latest Raspberry Pi OS based on Bullseye and use OMV 6 all other guides in our Episodes should work absolutely fine. If you have any problems please let us know in the comments below to help others in our community :).

Man this is by far the best tutorial series I've found for setting up a media server. Thank you for actually explaining everything as you go through it!

This is an awesome series of tutorials! I'm just watching through all of them now. I may have questions or requests, but I'll wait to see if they're addressed before I ask. At this point I just want to say, THANKS!

Great video. So far everything from this video seems to still be applicable to omv 6. I learned a lot from this video. I had no idea I could and should change my docker files location. Thanks for doing these videos.

Hello, that’s a GR8 video tutorial! You have just made a new subscriber 😊
note: in case SSH access is lost on your RaspberryPi you can re-enable it in -> Access Rights Management by applying user and group privileges.

I've drunk so much tea during this series I am translating "pop of and have a cup of tea" as "pop off an have a cup of tea and a wee".

Hi there, I have tried this install four times with the same result; my network connections have been removed, placing the mouse cursor over the network connection icon produces a "connection to dhcpcd lost”message. The folder /etc/dhcpcd.conf is missing, the output of the install script shows the deletion of the dhcpcd5 package. I have tried reinstalling the DHCPCD package which went OK and replacing the /etc/dhcpcd.conf file but no improvement.
Any Ideas?

Great video. Just wondering why you kept the long name for the drive at 25:50, could you not shorten it?
Also, very curious about RAID arrangements, that would be a good topic for a video. All this work would be for nothing if the SSD fails.

Great series. Thanks for the guidance. In Episode 5 we seem to have merged two series together. One for installing only on a SSD drive and one on a sd card. I've gone to the route of installing just to the ssd drive. However omv doesn't see it as a valid drive that I can use for shared folders. Is this correct and I need a second ssd drive to share to? Thanks for any feedback.

Thee only thing that i changed is the long name of external drive gererated by the OMV mount function it’s confusing ! i wanted to keep folders organised and simple.
I changed the following xml file : .. you need to search and change drive name and location of external drive generated by the OMV user inference ! You can put whatever you want path and drive name !

Once again thanks alot for the great tutorials!
As I pointed out under your previous video: I changed the default user's name and now only have this one single user running. Is it advisable to still create a new user with the same smaller set of permissions in OMV (comparable to your user1) and disable ssh on my main (and only) user account?

Struggling to get any e-mails sent via gmail account. I have tried on OMV as well as on a subsequent container (bitwarden) as explained in another episode. Since this was already working on a different raspi setup (no docker, just running a nextcloudpi) I begin to wonder whether this is related to this particular setup with cloudflare etc. Did anyone successfully receive (and send) e-mails via gmail API?

Unfortunately can't get Docker installed using this guide. Using Openmediavault 6 the process has changed significantly and I'm just running into loads of errors whenever I create folders, try to install openmediavault-compose in the UI of Openmediavault and the errors don't point me anywhere making it extremely hard to troubleshoot. Thanks for the help so far though

@addicted2tech I had to rebuild my PI due to a problem I had and had to reinstall everything. In the past, before the PI rebuild I had OMV working with some shares, do you know how can I add those shares and folders that I already have on the external HDD that I am going to still use with this project? I already mounted the drive and I am able to see it on the OMV interface, just don't know how to add the shares that I already have on that external HDD that was the same I was using before the rebuild.
